The hotels at Attabad Lake range from two large lakefront resorts, Luxus Hunza and the new Pearl-Continental Attabad Lake, to smaller lodges and cabins near the main boat landing and simpler guesthouses at the Gulmit end. Staying on the lake gets you a quiet evening and early morning on the water after the day visitors have left, but it costs more than Karimabad and cuts you off from restaurants and walks. For most people one lakeside night, in a trip otherwise based in Karimabad, is the right amount.

Where are the hotels around the lake?
Attabad Lake fills the valley for more than 20 km between the site of Attabad village and Gulmit, with the Karakoram Highway running along its eastern side, much of it through tunnels. That shapes where the hotels are. They fall into three areas:
- Around the main landing at the southern end, where the boats and cafés are. This is the busiest part of the lake by day, and the most convenient for Karimabad.
- On the shore along the tunnels, where a few hotels, including Luxus Hunza, sit on the water off the highway. These are the most secluded spots.
- At the northern end, around Shishkat and Gulmit, where the lake narrows and the villages begin. The views are down the lake rather than across it, and the prices are lower.

The big lakefront resorts
Luxus Hunza Attabad Lake Resort
Luxus Hunza is the best-known hotel on the lake, built right on the shore a few kilometres north of the main landing. It is a full resort: lake-view rooms and suites, family rooms and tent-style rooms, a large restaurant with terraces over the water, a gym and spa, and its own speedboats, jet skis and boat trips.
Why stay: the setting, and having everything on site. It suits families and couples who want a resort night with the lake at the door.
Worth knowing: in June 2025, after a video alleging sewage discharge into the lake went viral, Gilgit-Baltistan's authorities sealed part of the hotel and fined it PKR 1.5 million for environmental violations. Reviews since have been mixed, with praise for the views and complaints about upkeep. Read recent reviews before you book.
Pearl-Continental Attabad Lake
The newest arrival, run by PC Hospitality with Road & Story as development partner, began a soft opening in May 2026 with 35 rooms and one restaurant. When complete it is planned to have 117 rooms, several restaurants and event spaces. The company says it has built in modern wastewater treatment, an obvious selling point after the controversy of 2025.
Why stay: an established hotel brand and new rooms with lake views.
Worth knowing: it is still in its first season. Soft openings mean a limited choice of rooms and facilities, so check what is running on your dates.
Mid-range lodges and cabins
Around the main landing and along parts of the shore there are smaller hotels, lodges and cabin-style stays, many built in the last few years, with terraces facing the water. Standards vary more than the photographs suggest. The best have heated rooms, reliable hot water and a proper view; the weakest are close to the car park and the jet-ski noise.
Why stay: most of the lake view for less than the resorts. Worth knowing: these change hands and names quickly. Check recent reviews and photographs taken by guests, not just the hotel's own.
Budget: Gulmit and Shishkat
At the northern end of the lake, Gulmit and Shishkat have guesthouses and small hotels, some with a view down the water. They are cheaper than anything on the shore, and they come with a village around them: somewhere to walk, a few places to eat, and a quieter evening than the landing.
Why stay: price, and a good base for the rest of Gojal. Gulmit is also on the way to the Hussaini bridge, Passu and the Khunjerab Pass. Worth knowing: fewer rooms face the lake directly, and not every guesthouse in Gojal stays open through the colder months.
What to check before you book
Lakeside rooms are sold on the view, so ask the questions that decide whether you get it:
- Does this room face the lake? "Lake view" sometimes means the terrace or restaurant, not the room. Ask for a photograph from the window or balcony.
- How is the room heated, and what happens when the power goes? Nights by the water are cold outside high summer.
- Is there parking close to the room, and is the access road steep or rough?
- What meals are available, and until what time? At the more isolated hotels you will eat every meal in the hotel.
- How far is the room from the highway? Trucks run along the lake day and night.
- What is the cancellation policy? Landslides on the Karakoram Highway can delay arrivals by a day, especially in July and August.
- How does the hotel treat its wastewater? After 2025, it is a fair question, and a good hotel will have a clear answer.
Attabad and the building question
Lakeside development has become a live issue. In 2025 Gilgit-Baltistan's Environmental Protection Agency noted that Attabad Lake had been designated a drinking water source under the Greater Hunza Water Supply Scheme, and recommended a strict ban on further construction around the lake, along with a pause on new hotels in central Hunza, Duikar and at Borith Lake. The sealing of part of Luxus Hunza in June 2025 came in the same weeks.
For travellers, the practical upshot is modest: expect the rules on building and boating around the lake to tighten, and choose a hotel that takes its sewage and rubbish seriously. Wherever you stay, take your litter away with you and keep soap and shampoo out of the lake.
Is staying at Attabad Lake better than Karimabad?
For most trips, no, but one night on the lake is worth considering.

Stay at the lake if you want a special night, you are on honeymoon, your children will spend the evening on the shore, or you are heading on to Passu and Khunjerab and want to break the drive.
Stay in Karimabad if you are on a budget, you want to walk to dinner, or you are there for the forts and the walks. You can still see the lake at its quietest by leaving Karimabad at 7 in the morning.
