French Beach vs Hawksbay comes down to one trade-off: French Beach has clearer water and rock-pool snorkelling but is hard to get into without a hut booking, while Hawksbay is open to anyone, has far more huts to rent and a lively public stretch, but sits on rougher, murkier open sea. Neither is simply "better". Which one suits you depends on whether you can get a French Beach booking, how big your group is, and what you actually want to do once you're there.

French Beach's rocky shore is the reason people go there. It is gentle water, suited to floating and looking rather than swimming laps.

Hawksbay faces the open Arabian Sea directly, and the water is murkier, with real surf and rip currents that have made it one of the more dangerous beaches on this coast for swimming. It isn't a snorkelling beach at all. What it offers instead is space, sand and a proper beach feel that French Beach's rocky shore doesn't have.

If clear water for snorkelling is the priority, French Beach wins outright. If you want a sandy beach to spread out on, Hawksbay is the better fit, even with the rougher sea.

Access: booking required versus open to everyone

This is where the two beaches differ most in practice. French Beach sits behind a boundary wall with a guarded gate that generally admits hut owners, renters and their guests rather than walk-in visitors. There is no fixed ticket, but turning up without a booking is a gamble, and many people are turned away.

Hawksbay has a free, open public stretch that anyone can drive to and use, alongside the rows of privately owned and rental huts. You don't need to arrange anything in advance to spend a day on the public sand, though a hut still needs booking if you want one.

If you haven't planned ahead or don't have a contact who can get you into French Beach, Hawksbay is simply the more reliable choice for a spontaneous trip.

Huts and cost

Hawksbay has by far the larger choice of rental huts on this stretch of coast, from basic to well-appointed, with new listings appearing regularly on hut-rental pages and sites. French Beach has comparatively few huts available to rent, since many are kept for the owners' own use, and finding one usually depends on a personal contact or a rare listing rather than an open booking site.

Crowds

Hawksbay's public stretch draws real crowds, especially on Sunday afternoons, public holidays and during Eid, when the road out and the sand itself get busy. Weekday mornings, by contrast, are quiet.

French Beach is naturally quieter, simply because access is restricted to people with a booking. Even on a busy weekend, it doesn't see the open crowds of Hawksbay's public sand, since the gate limits numbers by design rather than by choice.

If you want a lively, sociable beach day, Hawksbay delivers that easily. If you want a quiet day away from crowds, French Beach's restricted access works in your favour.

Family-friendliness

Both beaches can work for families, but in different ways. French Beach's shallow, gentle rock pools are a calmer environment for young children to look at sea life, as long as an adult keeps them out of the deeper gaps between rocks where currents run. It suits families who have a hut booking and want a controlled, quiet day.

Hawksbay's public stretch has more space to spread out, a KMC lifeguard and emergency centre on part of the beach, and camel and horse rides for children, but the sea itself is genuinely dangerous for swimming, with a known history of drownings. Families need to keep children well back from the water here rather than let them paddle freely, and stick close to the lifeguard-covered section if anyone goes near the sea at all.

Neither beach is a place to let children swim unsupervised. French Beach's pools are the gentler water; Hawksbay's public stretch is the easier place to get to and has more going on outside the sea itself.

Turtles and water sports

Hawksbay has one advantage French Beach doesn't: it's a significant green turtle nesting site, with a Sindh Wildlife Department hatchery, mainly between September and February. Choose French Beach if: you can get a hut booking, you want to snorkel or explore rock pools, and you'd rather have a quiet day than a lively one. Time it around a daylight low tide for the best water.

Choose Hawksbay if: you don't have a French Beach contact, you're travelling with a larger group, you want the option of water sports or a turtle-season evening, or you simply want the reliability of knowing you can get in without arranging anything beforehand.
