There is no official public campground inside Nathia Gali itself. The town sits inside Ayubia National Park, a protected forest managed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department, and the park's rules require the department's approval for activities within its boundary, which in practice rules out pitching a tent wherever you like. Why camping is restricted here
Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia all sit in or beside Ayubia National Park, 3,312 hectares of protected deodar, pine and fir forest declared a national park in 1984 and enlarged in 1998. Under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife and Biodiversity Act 2015, the park is under the Wildlife Department, and activities inside it need the department's approval. That covers the whole point of wild camping: choosing your own spot in the forest and staying the night.
The park is not fenced off from the towns, and its three marked trails, the Pipeline Track, Mushkpuri and Miranjani, are walked by thousands of people a year without anyone asking permission for a day hike. Overnight camping is a different matter, and there is no visitor-facing process for booking a night in the forest itself, unlike a proper national park campground elsewhere. Where people actually camp near Nathia Gali
In practice, a "camping" trip to the Galiyat usually means one of these, not a tent pitched inside the national park:
- A hotel or guesthouse lawn. Several properties around Nathia Gali and Dunga Gali let guests pitch a tent on their own grounds, with a proper toilet and the hotel's security a short walk away. Ask directly when you book; it is not advertised everywhere.
- A guided operator's trip. Local trekking and tour operators sometimes run overnight camps at meadows and viewpoints outside the strict park boundary, with their own permissions, a cook and a group. This is the closest thing to organised camping in the area.
- Private land beyond the town, arranged through a known local contact. Never assume unfenced forest or meadow is open for anyone to camp on; much of it belongs to the park, the Galiyat Development Authority, or a private owner.
Kalabagh, on the Abbottabad side, is often mentioned for its green meadow, but the well-known spot there is on a Pakistan Air Force base and open to families for the day on payment of a small fee, not for overnight camping.
Camping pods: the nearest official option
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority runs small camping pods, simple wooden huts with beds, at scenic sites around the province, but none is in Nathia Gali itself. Leopards and camping safety
The Galiyat forests hold a healthy population of common leopards. A 2022 survey counted at least 40 pairs in the area, and while attacks on people are rare, they have happened in the region over the years. This is the practical reason to avoid an unguided night in the open forest, whatever the permission situation:
- Camp only at a proper site, on a hotel's grounds or with a local operator who knows the ground, not in an isolated forest clearing.
- Keep food sealed and away from the tent, and don't leave rubbish out overnight.
- Stay in a group, and keep any children inside the tent after dark rather than wandering.
- Have a torch and a charged phone, though signal in parts of the Galiyat is patchy.
What to carry
- A warm sleeping bag or extra blankets; nights at 2,400 to 2,500 metres are cool even in June and cold from October
- A waterproof tent and groundsheet, since the Galiyat gets real rain in the monsoon
- Water and snacks, and a way to boil water if the site has no kitchen
- A first-aid kit and any regular medication
Is camping in Nathia Gali worth it?
If the aim is simply a night under canvas in cool hill forest, yes, but arrange it through a hotel that allows tents on its grounds or a local operator, rather than heading up hoping to find somewhere to pitch. That gets you the setting without falling foul of the park rules or spending a night alone in leopard country.
If what you actually want is a proper campground with facilities and an official booking, Thandiani's KP camping pod or a site further into Hazara or Kaghan suits that better than Nathia Gali does right now.
