Camping in Murree Hills: Where It's Allowed and Safe

Camping in Murree splits into two very different options. At Patriata, the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP) runs managed glamping pods with fences, staff and a mosque on site, which suits anyone who wants the outdoors without giving up much comfort. Around Kotli Sattian, a quieter tehsil in the same hills, camping is informal, on forested ridges with no set facilities, and suits people bringing their own gear and expecting to be self-sufficient.

Patriata: the managed option

At Patriata Top, reached by road, chairlift or cable car, TDCP runs a set of glamping pods: five two-bed pods and three four-bed pods, sleeping 22 people in total, at around 2,300 metres. The site has security staff on duty around the clock, fencing to keep wildlife out, a walking track, small shops and a mosque, so it is closer to a well-run resort than a traditional campsite. It is the option for families or first-time campers who want a night outdoors with a real bed, proper toilets and someone else responsible for security.

Book ahead, particularly for weekends and holidays, since the pods are a fixed, limited number. Kotli Sattian: informal camping in the forest

Kotli Sattian, a quieter tehsil in the same hill range south-east of Murree, about 50 km from Islamabad, is where people camp when they want genuine forest and no crowd. The ridges around Danoi forest and the Chevra hills are popular for pitching a tent overnight, valued for dark skies away from any town lighting and views that take in the sunset and, after dark, the Milky Way on a clear night.

There is no single managed campsite here, and facilities are minimal: expect no restaurants, limited parking and basic or no toilets once you are off the main road, and only one fuel station of note on the whole route. This is camping in the traditional sense, where you bring what you need rather than relying on what is there. Weather risks to plan around

Murree's hills change quickly, and the risks differ sharply by season.

• The monsoon, July and August. Rain is heavy and can arrive with little warning, turning a dry pitch into a wet one within an hour and making forest tracks slick underfoot. If you camp in this period, choose ground that drains well and be ready to move quickly if a storm sets in.
• Winter, December to February. Nights fall well below freezing even in the town, and snow reaches the higher ridges from January onward. A winter camping trip is only for well-equipped, experienced groups; for most visitors, the TDCP pods at Patriata, which have proper shelter, are the sensible winter option rather than a tent on an open ridge.
• Spring and early summer, April to June, and autumn, September to November, are the most reliable windows for comfortable camping: milder nights, less rain, and clearer skies for stargazing. These are the months to aim for if your dates are flexible.

What to carry

For an informal camp around Kotli Sattian, or anywhere off a managed site, pack as though nothing will be available once you arrive:

• A tent suited to cold nights, and sleeping bags rated well below the temperature you expect
• Extra fuel for the car; fuel stations are scarce on these roads
• Water and food for the whole trip, plus a stove if you are cooking
• Warm layers for everyone, including for a summer night, and waterproof gear in the monsoon
• A torch or headlamp and spare batteries or a power bank, since there is little lighting off the main road
• A basic first aid kit and any regular medication

For a stay at the TDCP pods, most of this is provided, but it is still worth carrying warm layers, since the walk between the pods and the chairlift or car park is outdoors at altitude.

Is camping in Murree a good idea?

For a comfortable first experience of camping, the Patriata pods are a good choice: proper beds, security and facilities, with the feel of being outdoors without the risk of a badly chosen wild pitch. For an experienced group with the right gear who want genuine quiet, dark skies and no crowd, Kotli Sattian delivers something Murree town cannot, at the cost of doing everything yourselves.

It is not the right choice for families with young children who need reliable toilets and shelter, or for anyone heading out without checking the forecast first; a sudden monsoon downpour or an unexpected cold snap is a real risk on an open ridge with no facilities nearby.
