The best chaat in Lahore is still at Lakshmi Chowk, where Rana Aloo Chana Chaat has sold its potato and chickpea chaat for more than fifty years, for about PKR 170 a plate in 2026, and Amritsari Dahi Bhallay has made dahi bhallay and fruit chaat since 1948. In newer Lahore, Nafees in Model Town is the name for dahi bhallay, and Ghalib Market in Gulberg for samosa chaat.
This guide covers the chaat shops worth going out of your way for, in the old city and the newer suburbs, what each kind of chaat is, what to order and how to eat it without regretting it the next day. For the wider street-food scene, see our Pakistani street food guide.

What kinds of chaat does Lahore eat?
Chaat is a family of snacks rather than one dish: something starchy, something crunchy, yoghurt, chutney and a sharp spice mix, assembled to order. In Lahore you will see these most often:
- Aloo chana chaat. Boiled chickpeas and potato, usually with onion, tomato, coriander and mint, topped with yoghurt, tamarind chutney, lemon and chaat masala. Lahore's oldest version, and the cheapest.
- Dahi bhallay. Soft lentil fritters soaked and then smothered in chilled, lightly sweetened yoghurt, with chutney, papri and spice. The summer favourite.
- Papri chaat. Crisp fried wafers broken over chickpeas and potato, with yoghurt and chutney. Eat it fast before the papri softens.
- Samosa chaat. A samosa crushed into chana, then dressed like any other chaat. Filling enough for a meal.
- Fruit chaat. Chopped seasonal fruit with chaat masala, lemon and sometimes cream. In Ramadan nearly every household and stall makes it for iftar.
- Cream chaat. Fruit folded into cream, a richer and sweeter Lahori variation.
Where is the best chaat in old Lahore?
Rana Aloo Chana Chaat, Lakshmi Chowk
Arab News profiled this shop in September 2026. Its founder, Hajji Latif, started more than fifty years ago selling chaat from a platter balanced on his head outside the cinemas of Lakshmi Chowk, then moved to a cart and later to a small shop. His grandson, Muhammad Kashif, now runs it with his uncle.
The recipe has not changed, according to regulars: boiled chickpeas and sweet potato layered with onion, tomato, coriander and mint, topped with yoghurt, sweet chutney, lemon and the family's own spice mixture. The sweet potato is what makes it different from most aloo chana chaat in the city. A plate cost PKR 170 in September 2026.
Amritsari Dahi Bhallay, Lakshmi Chowk
Muhammad Siddique came from Amritsar at Partition and opened his dahi bhallay shop in 1948, first in Gawalmandi and later at Lakshmi Chowk. His son, Muhammad Nawaz, known to customers as Naaji, runs it now, and Dawn's Images profiled it in 2021. The bhallay are made from pure maash lentils.
Its menu is wider than the name suggests: regular dahi bhallay, sweet cream bhallay, fruit chaat, aloo chanay, cream chaat and ice cream chaat. In winter it makes mutton bhallay to order, a meat-stuffed version you will rarely find elsewhere. It is open all year, though trade drops a little in the cold months.
Lakshmi Chowk is better known for karahi and late nights, and our Lakshmi Chowk food guide covers the rest of the junction. Chaat here makes a good start to an evening that ends with grilled meat.
Elsewhere in the old city
Chaat sellers work all over the walled city and the old bazaars, from Gawalmandi, where Amritsari Dahi Bhallay began, to the lanes around Anarkali. None of them is as well documented as the two Lakshmi Chowk names, so use the simple rule: choose the busiest stall, where the yoghurt is fresh that day. Our Gawalmandi food street guide covers that area's other food.
Where is the best chaat in new Lahore?
Nafees, Model Town
Nafees, in Model Town, is the dahi bhallay shop that newer Lahore swears by. It is widely reported to be Nawaz Sharif's favourite. The bhallay come in cold, fresh yoghurt with crisp papri, and reviewers single out its moong daal bhallay, made from yellow lentils, as the thing to order. It also sells samosas. Listings give its hours as about 11 am to 11:30 pm daily, and it has seating, which the old-city shops mostly do not.
Jamal Dahi Bhallay, Faisal Town
The Friday Times, asking Lahore's food lovers for their picks, named Jamal in Faisal Town and Nafees in Model Town as the city's top two dahi bhallay shops. It is the nearer choice if you are staying around Faisal Town, Garden Town or Johar Town.
Best Samosa Shop, Ghalib Market
The Best Samosa Shop in Ghalib Market, Gulberg, is the name food guides give for samosa chaat and samosa with chana: a crushed samosa, chickpeas and chutney, simple and filling. It is a quick stop on a Gulberg evening.
Sheikh G Samosay, Township
Further south, Sheikh G Samosay in Township is a small shop that food guides recommend for samosa chaat, worth knowing if you are in Township, Johar Town or nearby.
Lahore Chatkhara
Lahore Chatkhara is a family-run chain with branches in Gulberg, DHA, Fortress and Model Town, and its chaat papri is the dish people order. It is the most comfortable option with children, with proper tables and a fuller menu around the chaat.
How much does chaat cost in Lahore?
Chaat is still one of the cheapest things to eat in the city. Rana's aloo chana chaat cost PKR 170 a plate in September 2026, and most old-city chaat and dahi bhallay is in the same range. Seated restaurants and the Gulberg and DHA chains charge more. Prices rise with inflation, so check the board. Carry cash for the old-city shops.
When is the best time to eat chaat in Lahore?
- Late afternoon and evening. Chaat is a snack between lunch and dinner, and most shops are at their busiest from late afternoon onwards.
- Summer for dahi bhallay. Chilled yoghurt is at its best in the heat, from April to September, though that is also when hygiene matters most.
- Winter for the specials. Amritsari's mutton bhallay is a cold-weather dish.
- Ramadan for fruit chaat. In the hour before iftar, stalls across the city sell fruit chaat, dahi bhallay and pakoras, and the queues are long. Our Lahore in Ramadan guide explains how the city's food changes in the month.
Is chaat in Lahore safe to eat?
Chaat is assembled cold, from yoghurt, chutney, chopped onion and fruit, so it carries more risk than hot cooked food. That does not mean avoiding it; it means choosing well.
- Eat at busy shops, where the yoghurt and chutney are made and finished the same day.
- Avoid fruit chaat that has been sitting out, especially in summer heat.
- Ask for no raw onion if your stomach is sensitive.
- Choose seated places such as Nafees or Lahore Chatkhara on a short trip where a bad night would cost you a day.
Our guide to whether street food in Pakistan is safe has more on this.
Which chaat should you go for?
If you only have one evening, go to Lakshmi Chowk: Rana's sweet potato chaat, then a plate of dahi bhallay at Amritsari, and karahi to follow. It is the oldest chaat in the city, at old prices, in a crowded, noisy setting.
If you want a seat and a quieter evening, Nafees in Model Town for dahi bhallay, or Lahore Chatkhara for chaat papri. If you want something filling on the move, a samosa chaat in Ghalib Market. For the rest of the city's food, see our guide to the famous food of Lahore and our experiences page.
