In Azad Kashmir, dial 15 for police, 1122 for Rescue 1122 (ambulance, fire and rescue) and 1422 for the AJK tourism helpline. Save all three before you leave Islamabad or Lahore, because mobile signal in the valleys can be weak and you will not want to search for numbers at the roadside. Police: 15
The police emergency number in AJK is 15, as in the rest of Pakistan. Use it for accidents, theft, threats or anything that needs an officer. The AJK government publishes a helplines page (ajk.gov.pk/helplines) with district-level police and control-room numbers for all ten districts, and it is worth saving the number for the district you are staying in.
Rescue 1122
Rescue 1122 handles road accidents, medical and trauma emergencies, fires, building collapses and disasters. It is not available everywhere in Azad Kashmir. According to the AJK State Disaster Management Authority, the service started in Mirpur, Bhimber, Kotli and Sudhnoti in 2007, reached Muzaffarabad in 2013 and the Jhelum Valley and Rawalakot in 2016. In 2022 it was extended to six more tehsils, including Shardah, Leepa and Hajira.
That list does not mention every district, and we could not confirm coverage for Bagh or Haveli. Do not assume a 1122 ambulance will reach a remote village quickly. On mountain roads a vehicle can take a long time to arrive, so in a serious emergency, ask the driver or hotel about the nearest hospital as well as calling.
The tourism helpline: 1422
The AJK Tourism and Archaeology Department announced helpline 1422 in September 2026 to give visitors information about their destination, alongside welcome and information centres at entry and exit points. It is meant for questions and help, not for medical emergencies. For an emergency, call 15 or 1122 first.
If you have no signal or internet
Signal drops in narrow valleys, and Azad Kashmir has had long mobile and internet shutdowns during unrest in 2026. Do not plan a trip that assumes you can always reach someone.
- Tell someone at home your route and expected arrival each day.
- Save the numbers above and your hotel's number offline, on paper as well as on your phone.
- Note the name of the nearest larger town and hospital on your route. Hotel staff or drivers usually know.
- Carry a printed copy of your booking and your CNIC.
- Expect calls to work more reliably than data, and text-based apps may fail altogether.

Is it safe to travel at the moment?
Pakistani visitors still travel to Azad Kashmir, but the security picture has changed in 2026. The UK government's travel advice advises against all travel within 10 miles of the Line of Control, which covers most of the Neelum valley, and against all but essential travel to the rest of Azad Kashmir. Joint Awami Action Committee protests from June 2026 were the deadliest unrest there in years, and the AJK government asked tourists to stay away in June.
