So far only Sindh has fixed its winter vacations 2026 dates. Its education steering committee has set the break for the last ten days or so of December, ending on 31 December 2026. As of late October, Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan had not announced theirs. Last winter their notices came out between November and 20 December. If they follow last year's pattern, Punjab will close for about three weeks from around 22 December and Islamabad for nine days from 26 December. KP's plains will be off for the first half of January, and the cold districts of KP, AJK and Balochistan for two months or more.
This guide sets out what each region notified last winter, with sources, and what has been confirmed for this one. It also shows the one week when the breaks overlap and crowd the roads, and which trip suits a break of each length.
| Region | Winter 2025-26, as notified | Winter 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|
| Sindh | 22 to 31 December; back 1 January | Late December to 31 December 2026 |
| Punjab | 22 December to 10 January, then extended; schools back 19 January | Not announced |
| Islamabad (FDE and private) | 26 December to 3 January; back 5 January | Not announced |
| KP summer zone | 1 to 15 January | Not announced |
| KP winter zone | 22 December to 28 February | Not announced |
| AJK cold areas | 26 December to 26 February | Not announced |
| AJK warmer areas | 29 December to 10 January | Not announced |
| Balochistan cold zone | From 16 December, about two and a half months | Not announced |
| Gilgit-Baltistan | No notification found | Not announced |
The fixed public holiday inside the break is Friday 25 December 2026, Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas. The Cabinet Division's 2026 list also gives Saturday 26 December as a holiday for Christians only.
What has been confirmed for winter 2026-27?
Sindh is the exception because its steering committee set the 2026-27 school calendar in advance. In February 2026 it kept the winter break at the end of December, and ProPakistani reported the schedule as endorsed at a meeting chaired by Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah. Officials had floated moving the break into January, when Karachi is at its coldest. The idea was dropped after Cambridge schools objected that their calendar follows international timelines.
The reports differ by one day on the start. The Express Tribune, on 12 February 2026, gave 22 to 31 December. ProPakistani, on 28 February, gave 21 to 31 December. The committee also said any change would need another meeting. The formal notice usually comes in December (last year's was reported on 11 December 2025), and the reopening day has not been stated. 1 January 2027 is a Friday.
For everyone else, here is when last winter's notices appeared, which is the best guide to when this year's will:
- Punjab: first dates reported in early November 2025; the notification followed in early December.
- Balochistan: the cold-zone closure was reported by 1 December 2025.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 17 and 18 December 2025.
- Islamabad: the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) on 18 December, and the private schools regulator, PEIRA, on 19 December.
- Azad Kashmir: 20 December 2025.
What were last winter's dates, region by region?
Punjab
Punjab's 2025-26 break went through three versions. Early reports gave a start of 23 December. The notification then set 22 December 2025 to 10 January 2026 for all public and private schools, and colleges were told to reopen on Monday 12 January (The News, 4 and 22 December 2025). On 10 January, Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat extended the break by a week because of a prolonged cold wave, on the advice of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Reopening moved to 19 January (The News, 10 and 11 January 2026). His office said the extension covered schools; the Higher Education Department posted one for colleges too.
The year before, the break ran from 20 December 2024 to 10 January 2025, with schools back on Monday 13 January. The pattern is a start between 20 and 23 December and three weeks off, sometimes more.
Sindh
Schools closed from 22 to 31 December in both 2024 and 2025, reopening on 1 January. Last winter's notice covered government and private schools and colleges alike, and board supplementary exams went ahead as scheduled.
Islamabad
The FDE closed all Islamabad Model Schools, colleges and ex-FG colleges from 26 December 2025 to 3 January 2026, with classes back on Monday 5 January (APP, Geo News). PEIRA told private schools and colleges in the capital to follow the same dates. It was the shortest break we could confirm anywhere in the country.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
KP issues two schedules by climate. For 2025-26, the summer zone closed from 1 to 15 January 2026. The winter zone, which APP says includes the hilly and snowfall-prone districts, closed from 22 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, colleges included. Both covered public and private institutions. The news reports did not list which districts fall in which zone, so ask the school or the district education office. District administrations enforce it: on 31 December 2025 the Abbottabad administration sealed a school for opening during the closure.
Azad Kashmir
The Elementary and Secondary Education Department set two schedules for government and private schools (ProPakistani, 20 December 2025). Cold areas were closed from 26 December 2025 to 26 February 2026, and warmer areas from 29 December 2025 to 10 January 2026. The report did not name the districts in each group.
Balochistan
Schools in the cold areas closed from 16 December 2025 for about two and a half months (Daily Pakistan, 1 December 2025). We could not find the 2025-26 dates for the warmer areas. Cold-zone schools take a short summer break instead, which in 2026 ran from 18 July to 2 August (APP).
Gilgit-Baltistan
We found no 2025-26 notice from the Gilgit-Baltistan education department in the press reports we checked. The only published GB schedule we found is old: Pamir Times reported a break from 21 December 2012 to 31 January 2013 for government schools outside Diamer. Do not plan on it; ask the school.
Can the dates change after they are announced?
Yes, and last winter showed how quickly. On 9 January 2026 Punjab's education minister called a viral notice of an extension "fake" and said schools would open on 12 January. The next day he announced a one-week extension himself. In 2024-25, KP extended its summer-zone break to 6 January 2025, a decision APP reported on 30 December. Smog can also close schools outside the break altogether: Lahore shut primary schools from 4 to 9 November 2024.
What that means for booking:
- Wait for the notification before paying for anything non-refundable that depends on the exact dates.
- Take the department's notice as the source, not a forwarded image.
- Keep the return flexible. An extension of a week gives you more time, but it also keeps the hill roads busy for longer.
When do the breaks overlap, and what does that do to roads and hotels?
Put last year's dates on the 2026 calendar and one week stands out. From Saturday 26 December to Thursday 31 December, Punjab, Sindh and Islamabad schools would all be off at once. It starts with the long weekend of Friday 25 December and ends on New Year's Eve. That is when Murree and the Galiyat, Lahore's old city, the Karachi beaches and flights between the three big cities are under the most pressure. Our New Year trips guide covers that week in detail.
After that, the demand shifts:
- 1 to 10 January: Sindh would be back on 1 January and Islamabad in the first week. Punjab would still be off, and KP's summer zone, the plains and lower areas, starts its fortnight. The Galiyat and Murree, the nearest snow for both, stay busy at weekends.
- Mid-January onwards: the plains are back at school. The hills fill only on weekends after fresh snow.
- February: only winter-zone families are still off. Kashmir Day, Friday 5 February 2027, gives a long weekend. Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting. The Cholistan Desert Jeep Rally has been held in February in recent years, but the 2027 dates have not been announced.
Two things on the road matter more than crowds. The first is fog. In mid-January 2026 the motorway police had sections of the M-1, M-2 (Islamabad to Lahore), M-3, M-4, M-5 and M-11 closed. Drive the motorways in the middle of the day, and check the National Highways and Motorway Police or ring 130 before setting out. The second is snow traffic in Murree. In January 2022, 23 people died there, most of them tourists, after far more cars were let up the hill than its roads could take. Since then the traffic police have issued snow traffic plans in recent winters and can stop cars going up in heavy snow, so check before you drive.
What is open over the winter break?
| Area | Late December to February | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Murree and the Galiyat | Open | Snow mainly December to February; traffic controlled in heavy snow |
| Naran and Kaghan | Closed beyond Kaghan | Paldran to Babusar was shut on 9 December 2025 |
| Babusar Pass | Closed | The only road to Gilgit is the KKH |
| Hunza and Gilgit | Open by the KKH and by air | Khunjerab is generally closed to all vehicles from late December to April |
| Skardu | Open by air, or by road from Gilgit | Deosai is snowbound |
| Chitral | Open through the Lowari Tunnel | The N45 is on the UK's no-travel list |
| Swat and Malam Jabba | Ski resort at Malam Jabba | Swat is on the UK's no-travel list |
| Lahore | Open | Fog and smog; Lahore Fort night visits |
| Karachi and lower Sindh | Mild | Average December highs about 28°C |
| Bahawalpur and Cholistan | Cool and dry | The jeep rally has been held in February |
| Fort Munro | Open; cold at night | In Dera Ghazi Khan district, where UK advice is all but essential travel only |
When snow closed the Kaghan road on 9 December 2025, the Mansehra deputy commissioner told travellers to use the KKH for the north, and the valleys beyond Kaghan were closed to tourists until spring (Daily Pakistan). For the valley-by-valley detail, see our guide to which northern areas are open in winter. Flights to Gilgit and Skardu depend on the weather, so read what happens when they are cancelled before you build a short break around one.
In Lahore, the Walled City of Lahore Authority announced in mid-October that the Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens will open from 7pm to 11pm (Express Tribune, 16 October 2026). That makes a December evening in the old city a real option; our Lahore Fort at night guide has the tickets and what is still unconfirmed. On the 1991 to 2020 normals, Karachi averages 28.4°C by day in December and Lahore 21.4°C, falling to 26.3°C and 18.4°C in January.
Which trip fits which break?
This is our reading of last year's dates against what is open. Distances are road distances from OSRM. Its drive times assume clear roads, so allow more in fog or snow.
| Break (2025-26 pattern) | Length | Trip that fits | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islamabad | 9 days | Lahore by the M-2 (291 km), or a flight to Karachi | Murree on the 25 December weekend and New Year's Eve |
| Sindh | About 10 days | Fly to Islamabad or Lahore; see snow on a day trip | A Gilgit or Skardu trip with no spare days |
| Punjab | About 3 weeks | The south first, the hills in January | Early-morning motorway drives in fog |
| KP summer zone | 15 days | The Galiyat, then Lahore or Karachi | Very little: it starts after the New Year rush |
| KP winter zone, AJK and Balochistan cold areas | 2 months or more | Karachi or Lahore in January, Cholistan in February | Leaving it all until Ramadan |
Islamabad families have the shortest break, all of it inside the peak week. Murree is 59 km away and Nathia Gali 89 km. Both are easier on a weekday morning than on the 25 December weekend. Lahore is about four hours down the M-2 and makes a better use of the holiday than a queue on the Murree expressway.
Sindh families are off during the same crowded week. If you want snow, fly to Islamabad and stay in the city, then go up for the day when a fall is forecast and the roads are open. That avoids paying hill-hotel prices on the busiest nights. A Gilgit or Skardu trip with only ten days and a fixed return date is a gamble on the weather.
Punjab families have the most room. Spend the first week, when everyone else is also off, going south: Bahawalpur is 422 km from Lahore, and Derawar Fort another 96 km. Then go to the hills once Islamabad and Sindh are back at school, which on last year's pattern means the first week of January. Lahore to Murree is about 340 km.
KP's summer zone starts its break just as the others end. Nathia Gali is about 230 km from Peshawar, and a fortnight is long enough to add Lahore or a flight to Karachi.
Winter-zone families in KP, AJK and Balochistan have two months, but the cold is the reason they are off. This is the time to go to the plains and the coast, where the weather is at its best; our guide to warm places in winter covers Karachi, Thar and Cholistan. If you want long sightseeing days, do it in January. Ramadan is expected to start in the second week of February.
Is it safe to travel over the break this year?
Pakistani families travel over the winter break every year, and most of the places in this guide are in ordinary use. But the picture has changed this autumn, so check local news and police advice before you go.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: the federal government imposed governor's rule and an emergency on 11 October 2026 (Dawn). The emergency covers 12 districts: Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, Orakzai, Bajaur, North Waziristan, both South Waziristan districts, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat (Express Tribune). The Galiyat and Hazara are not among them. Parliament approved the measures for two months in mid-October, so they fall due for renewal in December, around the start of the breaks. Dawn reported mobile data slowed or shut in selected areas of some cities.
- Swat: a suicide attack on the Kabal police station on 2 August 2026 killed 17. Families still go to Malam Jabba; check the situation in the week you travel.
- The KKH north of Mansehra: with Babusar closed, the only road to Gilgit and Hunza in winter is the KKH through Besham and Dasu. The UK advises against all travel on that stretch. In summer Babusar avoids it, but not in winter, so flying is the alternative.
- Azad Kashmir: the protests from June 2026 killed at least 24 people in their first two weeks, and the AJK government asked tourists to stay away from 5 to 20 June.
- Balochistan is on the UK's no-travel list, and we do not suggest trips there.
If you hold a foreign passport, read the UK travel advice for Pakistan, updated on 13 October 2026 with the KP emergency, or your own government's. Besides the places above, it advises against all travel to Peshawar, the N45 to Chitral and within 10 miles of the Line of Control, and against all but essential travel to the rest of AJK, Sindh north of and including Nawabshah, and Dera Ghazi Khan. Travelling against that advice can void your travel insurance.
Should you travel in the break at all?
If school dates are the only dates you have, yes, but pick your week. Avoid 25 December to 1 January if you can. Book once the notification is out rather than on last year's dates. Choose a city base with day trips over a hill hotel you cannot leave if the road shuts.
If you are not tied to the school calendar, travel outside it. A weekday in mid-January in the Galiyat, or Lahore in late February once the fog has gone, is calmer and cheaper than anything in the peak week. The deep north in winter suits travellers who want quiet and cold and can wait out a cancelled flight. It does not suit a family with young children and a fixed return date. For the wider seasonal picture, see our guide to when to go.
Frequently asked questions
When will winter vacations 2026 start in Punjab?
Not announced as of 23 October 2026. The break started on 20 December in 2024 and 22 December in 2025, and the notification came in November or December both times.
Have Sindh's winter vacations 2026 been announced?
Yes, by the education steering committee in February 2026: late December to 31 December 2026. Reports give the start as either 21 or 22 December, and the formal notification is expected in December.
How long are winter vacations in KP?
It depends on the zone. In 2025-26 the summer zone had 1 to 15 January off. The winter zone, the hilly and snow-prone districts, was closed from 22 December to 28 February.
Do private schools follow the government dates?
Last winter the notices in Punjab, Sindh, KP and AJK covered private schools as well. In Islamabad, PEIRA told private schools to follow the FDE dates. Individual schools can still differ, so check with yours.
Will the winter vacations be extended in January 2027?
Nobody can say yet. Punjab extended its break by a week in January 2026 because of a cold wave, and KP's summer zone was extended to 6 January in 2024-25. Trust only the education department's notice.
Is 25 December 2026 a holiday in Pakistan?
Yes. Friday 25 December 2026 is Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas, a public holiday, so 25 to 27 December is a long weekend. Saturday 26 December is an extra holiday for Christians.
