Swat to Chitral by road runs through Chakdara, Timergara and Dir, then under the mountains through the Lowari tunnel to Chitral town: about 280 km from Mingora, and six to eight hours of driving once you allow for the tunnel. It is the only road route between the two, since there is no direct road over the high ground between them, so anyone combining Swat and Chitral in one trip does this drive whichever direction they travel.

The route stage by stage
- Mingora to Chakdara, about 40 km, 45 minutes to an hour. This is the fast, well-surfaced stretch out of Swat, joining the N-45 national highway at Chakdara.
- Chakdara to Dir, via Timergara, about 124 km and roughly two and a half hours. This section carries heavy local traffic and has long been narrow for its volume; residents and transporters have repeatedly asked the National Highway Authority to widen it, and as of September 2026 that work has been approved on paper but has not visibly started.
- Dir to Chitral, via the Lowari tunnel and Drosh, about 114 km and roughly three hours, most of it through the tunnel and the switchbacks on either side. Our Lowari tunnel guide covers current opening hours, the toll and what causes queues.
- Total, allowing for a fuel and food stop in Dir and any wait at the tunnel: figure seven to eight hours door to door from Mingora, more with a full car or a lot of luggage on the roof.
There is no shortcut. Some maps show tracks over the hills between Swat and Dir, but they are not roads a normal vehicle, or most jeeps, should attempt.
Is this road safe?
This is the point to be direct about. The UK government's Pakistan travel advice (last checked September 2026) advises against all travel on the N-45 between the Mardan ring road and Chitral city, which is the exact road this route uses between Dir and Chitral, and it also advises against all but essential travel to Malakand and against all travel to Upper and Lower Dir. Pakistani travellers drive this road regularly, including families heading to the Kalash valleys, and it is not closed to traffic. But if you hold a foreign passport, check your own government's advice before you go: travelling against it can void your travel insurance, and the advice reflects a real security picture, not caution for its own sake. Whoever you are, check local news for Dir and Chitral in the days before you travel, and ask locally in Mingora or Chakdara about the state of the road that week.
Practical points for the drive
- Fuel up in Mingora or Chakdara. Pumps exist in Timergara and Dir too, but don't count on them being well stocked; fill the tank whenever it's convenient.
- Drive Chakdara to Dir in daylight. It is a busy two-lane road shared with trucks and buses, and it is not one to learn after dark.
- Time your arrival at the Lowari tunnel. It has controlled, one-direction traffic at busy times, and a wait of 20 to 45 minutes is common; the Lowari tunnel guide has current timings.
- Carry warm clothing even in summer. Dir and the approach to the tunnel climb well above Chakdara's elevation, and it is noticeably colder at the tunnel mouth.
- Start early. Leaving Mingora by 7am gives you daylight for the whole drive and a buffer if the tunnel queue is long.
Should you combine Swat and Chitral in one trip?
If you have the days, yes: it avoids a second long drive from Islamabad, and Dir itself is a reasonable halfway stop if you would rather split the journey over two days than do it in one push. If your time is short, treat them as separate trips; cramming Swat and Chitral into under ten days leaves too much of the time on the road.
