The shrine of Sultan Bahu stands at Garh Maharaja in Jhang district, in the flat Punjab country between Faisalabad and Multan. It is one of the major Sufi shrines of the Punjab, and it draws large crowds at the annual Urs, held on the first Thursday of Jumada al-Thani. It is a full-day trip from Faisalabad or Multan, and it is not close to anything else, so plan it as a pilgrimage or a devotional visit, not a sightseeing stop.

Who was Sultan Bahu?
Sultan Bahu was born in Shorkot in 1630, during the Mughal period, and died in 1691 aged 61. He belonged to the Qadiri Sufi order and is regarded as the founder of the Sarwari Qadiri line of teaching. He wrote about a hundred works, most of them in Persian, but it is his Punjabi poetry that made him a household name.
His shrine was first built at his grave site and had to be moved twice because the Chenab changed its course. The present shrine is at Garh Maharaja.
How to reach the shrine
Garh Maharaja lies about 17 km from Shorkot, and Faisalabad is about 116 km from Shorkot, so the shrine is roughly 130 km from Faisalabad. From Multan it is about a two-hour journey.
If you are coming by public transport, one visitor account describes taking a minibus from Jhang to Garh More, which took over two and a half hours, and then hiring a rickshaw for the last 4 km across farmland. That account is several years old, so ask locally. Coming with your own car or a hired driver removes most of the difficulty, and you should download your map offline before you leave the main road.

When is the Urs?
The annual Urs marks Sultan Bahu's death anniversary and is held on the first Thursday of Jumada al-Thani, the sixth month of the Islamic calendar. Coverage of past Urs events describes it as lasting two days, with a ceremonial laying of shawls at the shrine, and heavy police deployment. A second commemoration, for the Karbala martyrs, is held during Muharram.
Because Islamic months move about ten days earlier each year, the Urs does not fall in the same season every year. In 2026 it should fall around mid-November, subject to moon sighting, but confirm the date locally before you travel.
What is it like inside?
The shrine is a compound with a tomb chamber where visitors queue to pay respects. Expect a crowd on Thursdays and much larger ones during the Urs, when buses and wagons fill the area beside it. Outside there are stalls selling local crafts, including decorated head coverings and palm-leaf bread platters.
Security is tight, following attacks on other Sufi shrines in Pakistan, and you will be checked at the entrance. Photography is not allowed inside the tomb premises.
Etiquette
- Dress modestly and cover your head. Women should carry a dupatta.
- Remove your shoes before entering. Leave them where the staff direct you.
- Keep your voice low, and follow the queue rather than pushing forward.
- Do not photograph inside the tomb area, and ask before photographing devotees.
- Carry small notes if you wish to give a donation.
Practical tips
Go on a weekday morning for a quieter visit. Avoid the Urs unless you want to see it at full scale: transport is difficult and the crowds are very large. Take water, since the surrounding country is open farmland with little shade, and in summer the heat is severe. There are few places to eat near the shrine, and langar (free food) is usually available to visitors, but we could not confirm this for ordinary days.
Is Sultan Bahu shrine worth visiting?
If you follow Sufi poetry, or you are already on a shrines trip through the Punjab, yes. It gives a more rural and less touristed setting than Multan's shrines, and you will hear Bahu's verse where it is most loved.
