Soq Valley: Streams and Meadows Above Kachura

Soq Valley sits on the high ground above Upper Kachura, a short but rough jeep ride from Skardu, and it's the kind of place people add on when they've already seen Kachura's lakes and want one more stop before heading back to town. It has green meadows, clear streams good for trout, and space to spread out a picnic away from the road.

Where Soq Valley is

Soq Valley lies on the upper side of Kachura, the same area as the well-known Upper and Lower Kachura lakes and the Shangrila Resort. Where Kachura's lakes sit in the valley floor, Soq climbs above them onto higher, greener ground with its own stream running down from the surrounding slopes.

It isn't a long journey from Skardu, but the last stretch is a jeep track rather than a sealed road, so a 4x4 or an experienced local driver makes the trip easier than trying it in a small car.

Getting there

Most visitors combine Soq with a morning or afternoon at the Kachura lakes, since the routes overlap for most of the way. Hotels and guesthouses in Skardu can usually arrange a jeep and driver for a half-day trip covering both Kachura and Soq, which is the simplest way to see both without worrying about the track yourself.

What there is to do

Soq Valley's appeal is straightforward: green meadows, clear running water, and quiet away from the road. The stream feeding the valley is known for trout, and visitors who bring or hire tackle can try fishing in its clearer stretches, though anyone planning a serious session should check current fishing rules and any permit needed with a local guide, since these change and aren't something to guess at.

Beyond that, it's a good spot to walk for an hour, take photographs of the meadows against the surrounding peaks, and eat a packed lunch somewhere with a view rather than by the roadside. Some visitors camp here, though facilities are basic to non-existent, so anyone planning to stay overnight should come prepared and check locally what, if anything, is available before relying on it.

Best time to visit

Like most of the high ground around Skardu, Soq Valley is at its greenest and most pleasant from late spring through summer, roughly May to September, when the meadows are full and the stream is running well. Outside that window the track can be harder going and the valley far less green, so it's worth checking conditions locally before making the trip in early spring or late autumn.

What to carry

There's little in the way of shops once you leave Upper Kachura, so bring water, snacks and anything you need for a picnic before you set off. A hat and sun cream are worth having, since there's not much shade once you're up on the open meadows, and a light jacket helps if the wind picks up in the afternoon. Mobile signal is patchy to non-existent beyond Kachura, so let your hotel know roughly when you expect to be back.

Is it worth the detour?

If you're already at Kachura and have a jeep or driver willing to take the track, yes: it adds a couple of hours and a genuinely different, quieter landscape to a day that would otherwise be mostly about the lakes. If your time in Skardu is short, or you don't have 4x4 transport arranged, it's easy to skip in favour of better-known day trips from Skardu that don't need the extra vehicle.
