Skardu Airport Guide: Arrivals, Transfers and Delays

Skardu airport (KDU) is a small, single-terminal airport on the valley floor west of Skardu, beside the Katpana dunes. The town centre is 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi or hotel car, and Shangrila and the Kachura lakes are about as far in the other direction. PIA, Airblue and AirSial fly in from Islamabad, and PIA also from Lahore and Karachi. Arrival is quick and simple; the part that needs planning is the flight out, which weather can delay or cancel.

What is Skardu airport like?

Skardu was designated an international airport in December 2021, and PIA has used it for seasonal flights to Dubai, but day to day it is a busy domestic airport serving one of the most popular destinations in the country. Passenger numbers rose by just over half in 2024, to nearly 370,000, and the building has not kept up.

In July 2026 the Pakistan Airports Authority started a Rs 900 million expansion. According to the figures released at the launch, the terminal has 21,000 sq ft, six check-in counters, a departure lounge for 300 people, an arrival lounge for 80 and parking for 200 cars. The plan takes it to 39,000 sq ft, ten counters, lounges for 900 departing and 200 arriving passengers, and parking for 600. Work was at an early stage when it was announced and no completion date was given, so for now the halls are small and fill quickly on busy summer mornings.

The runway is shared with the Pakistan Air Force's Qadri base. That is why you will see military aircraft and why the rules on photography are strict (see below).

Arriving: what happens when you land

Arrival is usually quick. The terminal is small, there is one baggage belt, and with only one flight landing at a time, the wait for bags is short on a normal day.

At about 2,225 metres, Skardu is high enough that some people notice it in the first hour or two: a slight breathlessness on the stairs, or a mild headache. Take the first day gently, drink water, and leave Deosai, at over 4,000 metres, until you have had a night or two in the valley. Our travel guide has more on altitude across the north.

Facilities in the terminal

Keep expectations modest. The terminal has washrooms, a prayer area and a small café for tea and snacks, and not much else. A few things are worth sorting out before you fly:

• Cash. Bring enough for the taxi and your first day. ATMs in Skardu town are not always dependable, so draw most of your cash in Islamabad.
• SIM and data. Don't count on buying a SIM at the airport. Our guide to which SIM works in Gilgit-Baltistan explains what to sort out before you leave home.
• Food. On the way out, eat in town if you can; the café is small and gets busy when a flight is delayed.
• Children. There is little to keep them busy, so bring snacks and something to do.

Getting from the airport to Skardu town

There is no airport bus. The choice is a taxi from outside the terminal or a car sent by your hotel.

• Hotel pick-up. The easiest option. Most hotels will arrange one if you ask when you book, and it means someone is waiting with your name even if the flight lands late. Ask the price at the time of booking.
• Taxi. Drivers wait outside for each arrival. Meters are not used, so agree the fare before you load the bags. If you are unsure what is fair, message your hotel from the arrivals hall and ask.
• Your own driver. If you have hired a car and driver for the trip, have them meet the flight. It saves a second negotiation.

To Shangrila and the Kachura lakes

The airport lies between the town and the Kachura lakes, which makes the lakes a natural first stop. Shangrila, on Lower Kachura, is roughly 20 minutes' drive west, and the resort lists airport pick-up and drop-off among its services. Upper Kachura is a few minutes further along the same road.

If you arrive on an early flight, a sensible first day is:

1. Straight to Kachura from the airport, for the lakes while the morning is still calm.
2. Lunch and a rest, at Kachura or in town.
3. The Katpana dunes in the last hour of light, a few minutes from the airport, on the way back.

Flying out: check-in and timing

• Arrive about two hours before departure. There are only a few check-in counters, and on summer mornings several flights leave within a short spell.
• Carry your original CNIC, and a B-Form for children. Foreign nationals need their passport with a valid visa.
• Choose a left-hand window on the flight to Islamabad for the view of Nanga Parbat on a clear day.
• Keep warm layers in your hand luggage. Mornings at the airport can be cold even in summer, and you may be waiting longer than planned.

Delays and cancellations: how to wait them out

Skardu flights need good visibility through the mountains, both at the airport and along the route. When cloud comes down, flights are delayed or cancelled, often on the morning itself. Winter and spring are the worst seasons; summer is the most reliable, though monsoon cloud still grounds flights. Because most departures from Skardu are the same aircraft turning round, a cancelled flight in usually means a cancelled flight out.

How to handle it:

1. Keep your hotel room until you are in the air, or at least ask whether you can come back. Waiting in the terminal all day is miserable; waiting in a room 25 minutes away is not.
2. Ask at the counter for the next flight with free seats, not just the next flight. In peak season that can be a day or two away.
3. Know your rights. If the airline cancels, you can choose a later flight or a refund of the unused ticket, but there is no compensation for weather. PIA's helpline is 111-786-786 and Airblue's is 111-247-258.
4. Use the lost day. Katpana, Kachura and the Manthal Buddha Rock are all close, so a cancelled morning can still be a good afternoon.

Photography, drones and security

Because the runway is shared with an air force base, treat the airport as a military area. Don't photograph military aircraft, installations or checkpoints, and follow any instruction from security staff. Don't fly a drone anywhere near the airport, which includes the Katpana dunes next to it. Taking photographs from the aircraft window of the mountains on the approach is normal.

Is flying into Skardu worth it?

For a trip of a week or less, yes. The airport is close to town, arrival is quick, and an hour in the air replaces two long days on the Karakoram Highway. It also suits families with small children and older parents far better than the road.

What makes it work is slack. Book the first flight of the day, keep a spare day before anything fixed at the other end, and keep a road plan in reserve. If a missed day would ruin the trip, fly one way and drive the other.
