Karachi has Pakistan's only established scuba diving schools, and a proper open-water certification here follows the pool session, then a boat trip out to Churna Island for the open-water dives. Between one and two dive centres in the city run PADI courses year-round, but the open-water dives themselves only make sense between October and April, when the Arabian Sea is calm and clear.

Discover dive or full certification?
Most people's first contact with diving in Karachi is a Discovery Scuba Dive: a short, supervised dive in shallow water with an instructor, no certification involved. It is the cheapest way to find out whether you like being underwater before committing to a course, and centres running trips to Churna Island often price a single supervised dive at around PKR 10,000 per person (2026), though this varies by operator and what is included.
A full certification is a different commitment. The entry-level PADI Open Water Diver course qualifies you to dive independently, with a buddy, to about 18 metres, anywhere in the world. It has three parts: knowledge development (a manual or e-learning done mostly before you arrive), a set of confined-water skills usually taught in a swimming pool in the city, and four open-water dives that in Karachi mean a boat trip out to Churna Island or a similar site along the coast.
Where the course runs
Karachi's dive centres are based in the city, where the pool sessions and classroom work happen over a few evenings or a weekend. The open-water dives are then done as a separate trip, usually a full day or an overnight, out to Churna Island, the same reef most snorkelling trips from Karachi use. Because the open-water dives depend on calm seas and good visibility, expect your course to be booked as two separate stages: pool work whenever suits you, and open-water dives on the next date the centre has a suitable weather window.
The medical check every diver needs
Before anyone gets in the water, PADI and the other training agencies require a diver medical questionnaire, sometimes called the RSTC form. It asks about conditions such as asthma, heart problems, ear or sinus surgery, epilepsy and pregnancy. Most healthy adults answer no to everything and can start straight away. If you answer yes to any question, the agency requires a doctor's sign-off before you dive, not as a formality but because conditions that are manageable on land can become dangerous underwater.
Tell your instructor about any medication, recent surgery or ear problems even if the form doesn't ask directly. A blocked ear or sinus that won't equalise is the most common reason a first-time diver has to sit out a dive.
What it costs
Course prices are not published consistently by Karachi's dive centres, and change with fuel costs, boat hire and group size, so treat any figure you see, including here, as a starting point rather than a quote. As a benchmark, a single supervised trial dive with boat transport to Churna Island runs to roughly PKR 10,000 per person (2026). A full Open Water certification, which includes several pool sessions plus the boat trip and four open-water dives, costs meaningfully more than that. Get a written quote from the centre that states clearly what is included: certification fee, pool hire, boat transport, equipment rental and any overnight stay.
Best months for your open-water dives
Book the open-water portion of your course for October to April. Sea conditions off Karachi are roughest during the summer monsoon, and visibility and water temperature at Churna Island are best in the cooler months, with sea temperatures around 24 to 27°C. Trying to schedule open-water dives in July or August risks repeated postponements while you wait for a calm day.

- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for the boat journey
- Motion sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness, taken before you board

Is it worth doing in Karachi?
If you already know you enjoy being in the water and want a certification that works anywhere in the world, yes. Karachi is the only place in Pakistan to do it, the instructors are PADI-qualified, and Churna Island is a genuine coral reef, not a token dive site. If you are only curious and not sure diving is for you, start with a Discovery Scuba Dive rather than paying for a full course you might not finish.

Do I need to know how to swim to start a scuba course?
Yes. PADI courses require a basic swim test and a float or tread-water test before confined-water training begins.
How long does the full Open Water course take?
Typically three to four days in total: the e-learning or classroom work can be done at your own pace beforehand, pool sessions take one or two days, and the open-water dives are usually done over a single weekend trip to Churna Island.
Is scuba diving in Karachi safe for beginners?
Yes, when done through a certified centre with a qualified instructor. Conditions at Churna Island are generally moderate, but always dive within the limits your instructor sets and never dive if you have a cold or blocked sinuses.
Can children get certified?

A responsible dive centre will postpone rather than take divers out in unsafe conditions. Build a day or two of flexibility into your travel plans around the open-water portion of the course.
