Murree is the quick, easy hill break, about 70 kilometres from Islamabad and doable in a day. Swat is a real valley trip with rivers, forest, Kalam and higher lakes, and needs at least two or three nights. The deciding factor right now is security: the UK government advises against all travel to Swat, and on 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber killed 17 people at a police station in Kabal in Swat. Murree carries no such advice. If you want the simplest, lowest-risk choice, it is Murree.

Distance and time
Murree is the nearest hill station to Islamabad, about 70 kilometres by the Islamabad-Murree expressway, and can be visited in a morning or an afternoon. For families with limited time, or with young children, that is a large advantage.
Swat is a longer commitment. The Swat Motorway (M-16) cuts the trip from Islamabad to Chakdara to roughly one hour forty-five minutes, but the second phase beyond Chakdara is still under construction, so the rest of the way is on ordinary roads. Kalam, the main hill destination, is about 99 kilometres beyond Mingora. Plan a full day of travel each way and two to four nights there. Scenery
Murree sits on a ridge at roughly 2,290 metres among pines, with views over the Kashmir and Hazara hills. It is pleasant, but the town itself is congested, and the best of it is in the viewpoints and quieter spots nearby such as Patriata and Bhurban.
Swat is scenic on a larger scale: a broad river valley, terraced fields, forest above Bahrain and Kalam, waterfalls and, higher up, the Mahodand and other lakes in summer. It is why many Pakistanis call it the country's Switzerland. The scale and the greenery are the difference.
Crowds
Both are crowded at peak times. Murree is overwhelmed at weekends and whenever snow is forecast. In January 2022 a heavy snowstorm stranded thousands of vehicles and at least 23 people died, which is why we advise going midweek and checking the forecast. Swat is at its busiest at Eid and summer weekends, with traffic through Mingora and along the river.
Cost
Neither is a fixed price. Hotels in both places rise steeply at Eid and in summer, and Murree in snow. Murree is cheaper to reach because it is close, and you can do it without hotel nights. Swat needs several nights, fuel and food, so costs mount. Compare current quotes for your dates rather than trusting older figures.
Is Swat safe? What to know before you choose
Swat needs a straight answer.
- The UK government's Pakistan advice, updated on 22 September 2026, advises against all travel to Swat.
- On 2 August 2026 a suicide bomber attacked a police station at Kabal, in Swat, during a peace rally, killing 17.
- Other 2026 attacks have taken place elsewhere in the province, including Lower Dir and Kohat.
- Pakistani families still travel to Swat, particularly at Eid and in summer.
If you decide to go, check the latest local news and police advice before leaving and again on the way, stay flexible, and follow local guidance on routes and checkposts.
