A Murree and Kashmir trip plan works well for families because it breaks a long drive into two easier stages: a first night in Murree, about an hour and a half from Islamabad, then on to Muzaffarabad and the Neelum valley the next day rather than in one long push. Over four to six days this gives children a gentle start, a change of scenery from Murree's pine hills to the Neelum river, and no single day of more than four hours in the car.

The shape of the trip
Splitting Islamabad to the Neelum valley into two driving days, rather than one long day past Muzaffarabad, is what makes this plan suit families. Murree absorbs the first afternoon and evening comfortably, with none of the mountain-road driving that comes later. The second day, Murree to Muzaffarabad and on into the valley, is where the trip properly begins. Day by day: the 4-day version
- Day 1: Islamabad to Murree. A short drive, arriving by early afternoon. Mall Road and a walk around Kashmir Point fill the rest of the day.
- Day 2: Murree to Muzaffarabad, then into the Neelum valley. Down through Kohala and into Azad Kashmir, continuing up the valley as far as Keran or a little beyond, depending on how the children are travelling. Overnight in the lower or middle valley.
- Day 3: The Neelum valley. A full day with the river as the backdrop: short stops, a walk if the group is up for it, and an easy pace rather than trying to reach Kel and back in a day.
- Day 4: Return to Islamabad. Back down the valley, through Muzaffarabad and Kohala, in one longer day.
Day by day: the 6-day version, with Kel and Arang Kel
With two extra days, the same plan reaches further up the valley and adds a proper stop rather than a drive-through.
- Day 1: Islamabad to Murree.
- Day 2: Murree to Muzaffarabad, with time to see the town before continuing a short way up the valley for the night.
- Day 3: On to Kel, roughly 150 km and four to five hours up the valley from Muzaffarabad, stopping wherever the river or the road is worth it.
- Day 4: Arang Kel. The chairlift up from Kel, or the walk if the group prefers, to the meadow village above. A night here, or back down in Kel, depending on what is open.
- Day 5: Back down the valley, with a second night around Muzaffarabad or lower Neelum to break up the return drive.
- Day 6: Return to Islamabad.
Making it work with children
- Two nights, not one, either side of the drive. Murree on the way up and a break in the lower valley on the way back keep any single day's driving to a few hours.
- Don't push to Kel with very young children unless you have the days for it. The road narrows and the drive gets longer the further up the valley you go; the lower valley, around Muzaffarabad and Keran, is easier going and still worthwhile.
- The Arang Kel chairlift is the easiest way to give children the feel of the high meadows without a long walk. Check it is running before you plan a day around it.
- Layer clothing for both ends of the trip. Murree and the upper Neelum valley are noticeably cooler than Muzaffarabad and the lower valley, sometimes by several degrees on the same day.
- Carry snacks, water and any regular medication in the car, not packed away, since stops between towns can be a while apart once you are past Muzaffarabad.
- Book ahead in peak season. Murree and the main Neelum valley towns fill up from May through the summer holidays and around Eid.
Where to stay along the way
Murree has the widest choice of hotels of anywhere on this route, from budget to high-end, all within walking distance of Mall Road. Muzaffarabad has a smaller but reasonable range of city hotels, useful as a base if you are not continuing into the valley the same day. Further up the Neelum valley, accommodation is simpler: guesthouses and small hotels in Kel, and more basic lodging around Arang Kel and beyond, so book ahead rather than expecting a wide choice on arrival.
What this plan leaves out
This is a trip built around ease, not distance covered. It does not reach Sharda, Taobat or the high lakes above the treeline, which need a longer trip and a fitter group.
