Lahore to Abbottabad is about 450 km by road, and mapping tools give a little over four hours for the drive. Allow five to six hours in practice once you add a fuel and food stop and the slower stretch at the end. The route is almost all motorway: the M-2 to Islamabad, the M-1 towards Peshawar, then the Hazara Motorway (M-15) into Abbottabad.

The route, stage by stage
- Lahore to Islamabad on the M-2. The motorway is about 375 km long and normally takes four to four and a half hours. There are service areas along the way, and our Lahore to Islamabad motorway guide covers them.
- Islamabad to the Burhan interchange on the M-1. The interchange is roughly 58 km from Islamabad, on the Peshawar motorway.
- Burhan to Abbottabad on the M-15. The Hazara Motorway carries you past Haripur and Havelian, through tunnels, to the Abbottabad exit. Our Hazara Motorway guide explains the interchanges.
From Islamabad to Abbottabad is roughly 134 km by this route, according to a 2024 travel guide, and about an hour and a half of driving.
What do the tolls cost?
Toll rates change, so use these figures as a guide and check the board at each plaza.
- M-2: NHA raised the car toll by 7% in July 2026, to PKR 1,430 for cars, jeeps and taxis, valid until 23 April 2027 (Dawn, ProPakistani).
- Hazara Motorway: about PKR 350 for a car from 5 April 2026, on the Hassanabdal to Havelian to Mansehra expressway (ProPakistani).
- M-1: the section between Islamabad and Burhan is charged separately. We could not confirm that figure, so see our toll tax guide for the northern areas.
That puts the confirmed tolls at about PKR 1,780 for a car, before the M-1 portion. In July 2026 the Islamabad High Court suspended an NHA notification that would have added a 50% surcharge for vehicles without an M-Tag or sufficient balance, so check whether that has changed before you go.
Splitting the drive
Five to six hours is a long day with children, and the end of the trip is the part that tires people most: the last section climbs into the hills and the Abbottabad approach roads get busy on evenings and holidays.
Options that work:
- Leave early, arrive by lunch. Leaving Lahore at 6 or 7 in the morning puts you in Abbottabad by early afternoon, well before dusk.
- Break at a service area on the M-2. Fuel up and eat there rather than in Islamabad's traffic.
- Stay a night near Islamabad first. Some families reach Islamabad on the first day and continue to the hills on the second, particularly with elderly passengers.
- Watch for fog. In December and January the M-2 and M-1 can be slowed or closed by fog, mostly in the early morning. See our note on motorway fog closures.
Without your own car
Most people go by coach or van to Islamabad and take a second leg from there to Abbottabad, or book a private car with a driver for the whole way. Direct services may exist, so ask at the terminal or with a booking app. Fares vary by operator and season, so we have not quoted a figure.

Is it worth a direct trip?
Yes, if you are heading to the Galiyat, Thandiani or onward to Kaghan. Abbottabad sits at about 1,256 m and is much cooler than Lahore in summer. It is a comfortable base, and the drive is easier than most northern routes because most of it is on motorways.
It is less useful as a single-day trip from Lahore. Nine to eleven hours on the road for a few hours in the city is a poor trade, and you would do better to make it an overnight stay. If you are visiting for a day, start from Islamabad instead, using our Abbottabad day trip plan.

Is the route safe?
The motorway route to Abbottabad is used every day by families and coaches. It is not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against, although the advice for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is strict in other districts, and it also advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas, north of Abbottabad. If you plan to go beyond Mansehra, check current news and advice first. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's guidance, because it can affect travel insurance.
