The drive from Karachi to Umerkot is about 300 to 320 kilometres and normally takes 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic through Karachi and Hyderabad. The route goes north-east on the M-9 motorway to Hyderabad, then south-east on the N-120 through Mirpur Khas to Umerkot. It is a straightforward one-day drive, and there is no need to stay overnight on the way unless you want to.

This guide covers the three legs of the route, the realistic timings, where to stop, and how Umerkot fits into a longer trip east towards Mithi and Tharparkar.

What is the route from Karachi to Umerkot?

There are three stages.

  1. Karachi to Hyderabad on the M-9. The motorway is 136 kilometres long and six lanes wide. Light vehicles may travel at up to 120 km/h and heavy vehicles at 80 km/h, and it ends at an interchange at Kotri, by Hyderabad. You pay a toll, which changes, so carry cash or check the current rate. Our guide to Karachi to Hyderabad by road covers this leg.
  2. Hyderabad to Mirpur Khas. The road is a dual carriageway of about 58 kilometres, built as a public-private project and completed in 2012.
  3. Mirpur Khas to Umerkot. About 78 kilometres, roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half of driving. The road is the N-120, which runs on towards the Indian border at Khokhrapar.

The N-120 as a whole is about 220 kilometres long, from Hyderabad to Khokhrapar, passing Mirpur Khas and Umerkot on the way.

How long does it really take?

Published times of 5 to 7 hours are a fair range. The motorway portion is fast, and most of the variation comes from getting through Karachi at the start and through Hyderabad and Mirpur Khas. Leaving before 7 am avoids most of the Karachi traffic.

A useful rule is to add time rather than subtract it. A stop for food, fuel and prayer takes at least 40 minutes. Do not plan an arrival at Umerkot after dark if you can avoid it, because you are likely to share the road with trucks, animal carts and unlit vehicles on the N-120.

Can you go by train or bus?

By rail, passengers can take a train from Karachi towards Mirpur Khas (reported 4 to 6 hours) and then continue to Umerkot by road, about 1 to 1.5 hours, for a total of roughly 5 to 7.5 hours. We could not verify the current timetable, so check with Pakistan Railways before planning around it. Umerkot has no airport of its own.

We have no verified bus operator or fare to give for this route. For comfort and a fixed schedule, a private car or hired car with a driver is simpler, especially if you are continuing to Mithi.

Where to stop on the way

You do not need many stops. Sensible ones:

  • Before Hyderabad: Hyderabad is the right place for a proper meal. Our guide to Hyderabad's famous food points out what to eat.
  • Mirpur Khas, the largest town before Umerkot. Fuel up here. Our guide to places to visit in Mirpur Khas covers the town.
  • Umerkot itself: Umerkot Fort, the museum and the birthplace of the Mughal emperor Akbar, and the Shiv Mandir, are all within the town.

Is the road safe?

The main hazards are ordinary ones: fatigue, truck traffic, animals on the road and poor lighting at night. The UK government's current advice for Pakistan advises against all but essential travel to Sindh north of Nawabshah and within 5 miles of the Indian border (except at Wagah and Kartarpur). Neither covers the Karachi to Umerkot road as such. Umerkot is on the N-120 running towards the border, so do not go beyond the town towards the border without checking the local position. Foreign-passport holders should check their own government's advice, since travelling against it can void insurance.

Best time to make the drive

November to February is the most comfortable period, with cool days and clear weather. Summers in lower Sindh are very hot, and the monsoon in July and August can flood low roads and slow travel in the Mithi and Tharparkar direction. Our best time to visit Sindh guide goes through the year.

Is Umerkot worth the drive from Karachi?

As a day trip, it is a long day: 10 to 14 hours on the road for a fort, a museum and a temple. It works much better as part of a longer trip. If you are going on to Mithi, Islamkot or Nagarparkar, Umerkot is the natural halfway stop, and our Karachi to Tharparkar road guide continues the route. A weekend works well if you stay overnight in the town or in Mirpur Khas. For general planning, our travel guide has advice for road trips across Pakistan.
