What is the best souvenir to buy in Karachi?

It is a maze, so it helps to have a target. Sources give different opening hours, roughly from 10 or 11 in the morning to 9 or 10 at night, and say it is mostly closed on Sundays, so plan for a weekday or Saturday afternoon.

How to tell a real ajrak from a copy
This is where most visitors lose money. One Pakistani seller's guide says the ajraks in most shops are machine or table prints, sold at roughly PKR 200 to 1,200, and that shopkeepers often describe them as block printed. Genuine hand block printing with natural dyes is priced far higher in the 2025 listings we checked, from about PKR 5,000 to 20,000, depending on size and the number of layers.
A few checks:
- Ask directly, "hand block printed, natural dye?", and see if the answer is clear.
- Look at the back. Real block print shows the pattern on both sides of the cloth, while a cheap print is usually paler on the reverse.
- Look for small irregularities. Hand blocks leave slight variation, and machine prints repeat perfectly.
- Buy a cheaper print knowingly. A machine-printed piece is a fine souvenir at PKR 500, but not at a block-print price.

How to bargain
Bargaining is normal in Saddar's markets. Start well below the first price, stay friendly and be ready to walk away. Decide the most you would pay before you go into a shop, and check two or three stalls before buying. Speaking some Urdu helps.
