Jinnah Garden Faisalabad, also called Company Bagh or Bagh-e-Jinnah, is the city's oldest public park, laid out under the British in 1914. It is a walking and picnic garden in the middle of the city, with lawns, old trees, a jogging track, a library and a monument to Sir James Lyall, and it is at its best in the early morning and in the spring flower season. What is Jinnah Garden?
The Faisalabad district administration lists the garden as originally the Company Bagh, Kaiseri Bagh or King Garden, built by the British government in 1914 and renamed in 1990. One other source gives 1902 for its founding as a recreation place for officers, so if you quote a date, say "early twentieth century". Faisalabad itself was founded as Lyallpur in the 1890s, and the garden belongs to that first planned city.
What is inside
- Lyall Monument. A memorial to Sir James Lyall, the Punjab Lieutenant Governor after whom Lyallpur was named, built around 1920 at the eastern corner of the park.
- Walking and jogging track. Reviewers describe an extended track used by early-morning walkers. Its length is reported differently by different sources, from about 2 to 4 kilometres for a full round, so treat any number as approximate.
- Lawns, old trees and flower beds. The mature trees and shade are the main attraction in a busy industrial city.
- A library, a mosque and a tuck shop.
- A children's area with swings and exercise equipment. Visitors describe it as basic and ageing, and note that fountains and the lake are often not working.
The Lyallpur Heritage Foundation has been involved in restoring heritage sites in the city, according to the district website, though we could not confirm the details for this park.
Rang-e-Bahar flower show
In spring the city's parks and horticulture authority holds the annual Rang-e-Bahar flower show and exhibition at the garden. Dates change every year and depend on the weather, so watch local announcements in February and March. That is the easiest time to enjoy the garden, and also the busiest.
Timings and entry fee
We found conflicting or unsourced timings, and no official entry fee, so we will not print a figure. Most city parks in Pakistan keep morning and evening hours and are busiest at weekends and holidays. Ask at your hotel, or at the gate, and carry small change in case a ticket is required.
Best time to go
Early morning, from about sunrise, is when the garden is quietest and coolest, and it is when walkers and joggers use the track. In summer avoid the middle of the day, when Faisalabad is very hot and the shade only helps so much. From October to March, late-afternoon visits are comfortable.
What to pair it with
The district website lists two other heritage and leisure stops that combine well with a garden visit. The Lyallpur Museum, established in 2011, has ten galleries running from ancient archaeology to the Pakistan Movement, and is a good choice on a hot afternoon. Gatwala Forest Park lies about 17 kilometres outside the city on 131 acres, planted between 1984 and 1992, with boating, wildlife viewing and camping listed as facilities. Check current opening days before you go to either.
The city itself gives the garden its context. Lyallpur was planned in the 1890s as the centre of the Chenab Colony and renamed Faisalabad in 1979, and the old core was laid out on a Union Jack pattern with eight bazaars radiating from the Clock Tower. Seen that way, the garden is one of the few open green spaces left from that plan.
