The Faisalabad cloth market is not one building but the old bazaar quarter around the Clock Tower, or Ghanta Ghar, where the circular Gol Bazaar and the Rail, Montgomery and Chiniot bazaars are full of fabric shops. It is mostly a wholesale trade, but shoppers can buy unstitched suits, cut pieces, bedsheets and furnishing fabric there. Go on any day except Friday, when most shops in the Clock Tower bazaars close.

Faisalabad is the centre of Pakistan's textile industry, and the shops reflect that: they sell to traders from across the country as well as to families. This guide explains which bazaar is for what, when to go, what is worth buying and how to shop without overpaying.

Why shop for cloth in Faisalabad?

Faisalabad is known as the Manchester of Pakistan, and Wikipedia credits it with roughly half of the country's textile shipments. The mills on the edge of the city spin, weave, dye and print cotton and blended fabric, and much of it is sold on through the old bazaars.

The city's reach is wide. In 2021 Dawn reported traders in Karachi's own kapra market saying that Faisalabad supplied the bulk of the fabric they sold, and during the 2020 lockdown Dawn found Faisalabad cloth traders taking orders from Swat, Mardan and Mansehra. For a shopper, that means a large choice and prices set by a market that sells in bulk.

Which bazaar sells what?

The old city was laid out around the Clock Tower in the early twentieth century, with eight bazaars running off it in a pattern that, from above, looks like the Union Jack. A circular road, Gol Bazaar, joins them. Each bazaar has a trade it is known for, though in practice cloth turns up in several.

  • Gol Bazaar. The ring around the Clock Tower has a large cloth trade, with wholesale dealers alongside shops that sell by the suit. It is the natural place to start.
  • Rail Bazaar. The district government and Wikipedia both describe it as a gold and cloth market. You enter it from Railway Road through the Qaisery Gate, built in 1897.
  • Montgomery Bazaar. Also called Sutar Mandi, this is the wholesale centre for yarn and raw cloth. It is more useful to tailors, small manufacturers and traders than to someone buying two suits.
  • Chiniot Bazaar. Known for cloth, blankets, sofa fabric and curtains, so it is the one to visit if you are furnishing a house.
  • Katchery and Karkhana bazaars also have textile and clothing shops among other trades.

The other bazaars lean towards different goods: Bhawana Bazaar for electrical and electronic goods, Jhang Bazaar for meat, fish and vegetables, and Aminpur Bazaar for stationery. For the history of the tower and a walk through all eight, see our guide to the Faisalabad Clock Tower.

Outside the old city

  • The Factory Area, around Tata Bazaar off Factory Area Road, has many small wholesale suit sellers and factory outlets that sell lawn, cut pieces and ready-made suits. Quality varies widely from shop to shop.
  • D Ground, in Peoples Colony, is the city's main modern shopping district, with branded stores such as Gul Ahmed, Alkaram Studio and Sapphire. Prices are fixed, and it is the place for brand-new seasonal collections rather than bargains.

What is worth buying?

  • Unstitched lawn suits in spring and summer, the city's best-known product for family shoppers.
  • Khaddar, karandi and other winter fabrics from autumn onwards.
  • Men's shalwar kameez fabric, including cotton and wash-and-wear blends, sold by the suit length.
  • Cut pieces, the leftover lengths from mill runs, which can be good value if you check them carefully.
  • Bedsheets and home textiles, sold in sets, often far cheaper than in city malls.
  • Curtain and sofa fabric, especially in Chiniot Bazaar.

We have not given prices, because they move with cotton and yarn costs and with the season, and the figures shops quote online are often wholesale rates for bulk orders. Compare a few shops on the day and you will soon see the going rate.

When is the best time to go?

Avoid Friday. It is the usual weekly off in the Clock Tower bazaars, and most shops are shut. Saturday to Thursday are all working days.

Go late morning. Shops open through the morning and the lanes fill up in the afternoon and evening. In June 2026 the Punjab government ordered shops and markets across the province to close by 9 pm every day, so do not plan on late-night shopping without checking whether that order still applies.

Mind the season. Lawn collections arrive in spring and the bazaars are at their most crowded in the weeks before Eid, when prices are least negotiable. Summer afternoons in the narrow lanes are very hot; winter is the most comfortable time to walk around.

How to bargain and shop well

  • Ask whether a shop is wholesale or retail. Some dealers only sell in bulk or by the roll. Others will happily sell single suits; there is no point haggling with a shop that does not want your custom.
  • Compare three shops before buying. The same print can be found in several places at different prices.
  • Check the length and width of unstitched suits and cut pieces before paying, and unfold the fabric to look for faults, misprints or uneven dyeing.
  • Be wary of "branded" stock. Copies of well-known designer prints are common. If you want the genuine label, buy it from the brand's own store at D Ground.
  • Carry cash, in smaller notes. Card payment is not something to rely on in the old bazaars.
  • Keep your bags close in the crowded lanes, as in any busy market.

How to get to the Faisalabad cloth market

  • From Lahore: about 180 km on the M3 motorway, roughly two and a half to three hours. Our guide to Lahore's Azam Cloth Market covers the alternative if you would rather shop without leaving Lahore.
  • From Islamabad: take the M2 south and switch to the M4 at Pindi Bhattian. It is a long day there and back, so consider staying a night.
  • By air: Faisalabad International Airport has domestic flights.
  • In the city: take a rickshaw to Ghanta Ghar. In January 2025 the district administration announced plans to make all eight bazaars vehicle-free, with parking outside them and rickshaws to carry shoppers in, so do not expect to drive into the lanes.

If you are staying over, see our guide on where to stay in Faisalabad, and when you need a break, our list of the best food in Faisalabad starts with the samosas sold a few minutes from the Clock Tower.

Is it worth the trip?

It is worth it if you are buying in quantity: a wedding's worth of suits, bedsheets for a new house, fabric for a tailoring business or several families' Eid shopping. The choice is huge, and the bulk prices can make the drive pay for itself.

It is not worth a special trip for one or two suits. Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi all have good cloth markets, and the brand stores sell the same seasonal collections everywhere. The main cloth trade is in the old city around the Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar), especially in the circular Gol Bazaar and the Rail, Montgomery and Chiniot bazaars. Branded stores are at D Ground in Peoples Colony.

Is Faisalabad cloth market open on Friday?

Mostly not. Friday is the usual weekly off in the Clock Tower bazaars, and most shops are closed. Go any day from Saturday to Thursday.

Can you buy single suits in the Faisalabad wholesale market?

Yes, many shops will sell single unstitched suits and cut pieces, though some dealers only sell in bulk. Ask before you start bargaining.

What time do Faisalabad bazaars close?

In June 2026 the Punjab government ordered markets to close at 9 pm every day. Check whether that order still applies, and arrive by late morning for the easiest shopping.
