Jhelum makes a full and varied day trip from Islamabad: a UNESCO fort, a 19th-century memorial church and a short hike up a hill that has drawn pilgrims for over two thousand years, all within about half an hour of each other once you reach the district. The drive down the GT Road takes roughly one and a half to two hours each way, which leaves a comfortable day for all three if you start early.

This is a plan for fitting Rohtas Fort, St John's Church and Tilla Jogian into one day from Islamabad, with rough timings and where to break for food.

The route

From Islamabad, the fastest way down is the motorway to the GT Road interchange near Gujar Khan, joining the GT Road proper for the last stretch through Sohawa and Dina towards Jhelum. Rohtas Fort sits a few kilometres off the main road near Dina, before you reach Jhelum city itself, which makes it sensible to see the fort first on the way down rather than backtrack later.

A rough plan for the day

  1. Leave Islamabad by 7am. An early start avoids the worst of GT Road traffic around Rawalpindi and gives you a full day at the other end.
  2. Rohtas Fort, mid-morning. Plan two to three hours to see the main gates, Haveli Man Singh and Rani Mahal on foot. Our guide to visiting Rohtas Fort has tickets, timings and a walking route, and our Rohtas Fort history guide covers why it was built and what its gates are named for.
  3. Lunch on the way into Jhelum. The stretch of GT Road through Sohawa and Dina has ordinary roadside dhabas and small restaurants rather than well-known destinations, which suits a quick, functional lunch before you press on.
  4. St John's Church, early afternoon. A short stop in Jhelum Cantonment to see the 1860 memorial church built after the fighting of 1857. See our St John's Church guide for its history and how to visit respectfully, since it remains an active parish church.
  5. Tilla Jogian, late afternoon. About 25km west of Jhelum, this hill was a major pilgrimage site for Hindus and Sikhs for centuries, with a history going back more than 2,000 years and links to the Punjabi folk tale of Heer Ranjha. The walk up from the road is short, roughly 30 minutes to an hour depending on fitness, on a marked but sometimes steep path. Go in daylight and allow enough time to come back down before dusk.
  6. Head back to Islamabad by early evening, arriving after dark if you have made the most of the day, which is normal for this itinerary.

Should you do all three in one day?

It is a full day, not a relaxed one. If your priority is Rohtas Fort and you want to take your time there, doing the fort and St John's Church together and leaving Tilla Jogian for a future trip is a reasonable trade-off, especially with children or older family members in the group. If hiking is the priority, do Tilla Jogian earlier in the day while everyone has more energy, and treat the fort as a shorter visit.

What to bring

  • Water and snacks; options thin out once you leave the GT Road for the fort or the hill.
  • Comfortable shoes for the fort's uneven stone paths and the walk up Tilla Jogian.
  • Cash, since small stops along the way may not take cards.
  • A modest layer for the church, out of respect for an active place of worship.

When to go

Autumn through spring is more comfortable for the whole day, since the plains around Jhelum get hot in summer, particularly by early afternoon when you would otherwise be walking Rohtas Fort's exposed stone paths or climbing Tilla Jogian. If you do go in summer, get to the fort as early as it opens and leave Tilla Jogian for the very end of the day, closer to sunset when it has cooled slightly.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Islamabad to Jhelum?

Roughly one and a half to two hours by GT Road or motorway, depending on traffic around Rawalpindi and Gujar Khan.

Can I see Rohtas Fort, St John's Church and Tilla Jogian in one day from Islamabad?

Yes, though it is a full day of about 10 to 12 hours door to door. If time is tight, prioritise the fort and the church and leave Tilla Jogian for another visit.

Is the hike up Tilla Jogian difficult?

No. It is a short climb, roughly 30 minutes to an hour depending on fitness, on a marked path that is steep in places but does not require any technical skill.

Do I need to book anything in advance for this trip?

No. Rohtas Fort and St John's Church are both open to visitors without advance booking, and Tilla Jogian has no ticket or entry process.

What is the best time of year for a Jhelum day trip from Islamabad?

Autumn to spring. Summer afternoons on the plains around Jhelum get hot, which makes the fort's exposed paths and the hill climb harder going.
