Islamabad to Mangla Dam: Distance, Drive Time and Road

Islamabad to Mangla Dam is about 120 to 130 km by road, and mapping tools estimate one and a half hours. In practice, allow two to two and a half hours, because the route joins the Grand Trunk Road and then the Dina to Mangla road, and both slow down with traffic. Mangla Dam is in Mirpur district of Azad Kashmir, so this is an easy day trip from the capital.

What is the distance from Islamabad to Mangla Dam?

Sources give figures between about 120 and 130 km: one route planner shows 123 km from Islamabad airport, another about 130 km. The gap comes from where you start in Islamabad and whether the source measures to the dam wall or to Mirpur.

Mirpur is linked to the main Peshawar to Lahore Grand Trunk Road at Dina, in Jhelum district. Dina to Mangla Dam is about 17 km (10 miles), so most of the distance is spent on the GT Road.

Which road do you take?

Head out of Islamabad and Rawalpindi onto the GT Road towards Lahore, pass Gujar Khan, and turn off at Dina. From there the road runs through farmland and small villages to Mangla and on to Mirpur. Turn-offs and stops vary by neighbourhood, so follow live navigation from your starting point.

How long does the drive really take?

Google-style estimates put the drive at roughly one and a half hours. Other sources quote up to two and a half hours. The longer figure is the safer plan, and it matches the fact that the GT Road carries heavy truck traffic, has frequent junctions and runs through several towns.

Leave before 8 am on a weekday and you should be near the dam by 10 or 10:30. On Fridays, Sundays and public holidays, expect more traffic, particularly on the way back in the evening.

Other ways to get there

• Own car or hired car. The simplest option. There is plenty of space to park at the public viewpoints, but check with locals about access on the day.
• Taxi or ride-hailing. Route planners show a similar drive time of about an hour and a half, at a fare that varies by operator. Agree the price and waiting time before you leave.
• Train and road. Pakistan Railways runs from Rawalpindi towards Dina, and you would then need a road transfer to Mangla. It takes about two and a half hours to Dina and is only worth it if you do not want to drive.
• Bus. Buses and vans link Dina, Kharian and Mirpur, so you can reach Mirpur by changing at Dina. Timings and fares change often, so ask at the stand.

Is it safe?

The Islamabad to Dina route uses the GT Road and is not in an area the UK government advises against. However, the UK advises against all but essential travel to most of Azad Kashmir, and against all travel within 10 miles of the Line of Control. Overseas visitors should read their own government's advice, since it can affect travel insurance. Pakistani visitors regularly visit Mangla, but check local news and current advice before you go. Is it worth doing in a day?

Yes, if you want a lake, a large dam and a break from the city. It works as a long day out: two hours each way, and a few hours on the water or at the viewpoints. It does not leave much time for Mirpur itself.
