There is almost nowhere to stay at Khewra itself. Here is where visitors base themselves instead: Kallar Kahar, Jhelum, Pind Dadan Khan or Chakwal.

There are hardly any hotels at Khewra Salt Mine itself. A Tripadvisor listing for Khewra showed a single guest house in the town, and travel guides say the same thing: no large hotels near the mine, with better and more comfortable options in Kallar Kahar and Jhelum. For most visitors the realistic choice is a base in Kallar Kahar, Jhelum, Pind Dadan Khan or Chakwal, or no stay at all.

This guide explains each base, how far it is from the mine, and when it is better to skip the overnight stay and do Khewra as a day trip. Hotel names and prices change, so treat it as a guide to where to look rather than a booking list.

Should you stay overnight at all?

Often not. Wikipedia puts Khewra about 160 km from both Islamabad and Lahore via the M2, and about 30 km off the Lilla interchange. That is a long morning's drive but a comfortable day trip, and our guides to reaching Khewra and the Lahore to Khewra drive cover both routes.

An overnight stay makes sense in three cases. You want to combine Khewra with Katas Raj or the Kallar Kahar lake and do not want to drive back in the dark. You are travelling with children or older parents and prefer a shorter day. Or you are on a longer Salt Range trip and Khewra is one stop on the way. Our Khewra and Katas Raj day trip shows how much fits in a single day.

Staying in Kallar Kahar

Kallar Kahar is the usual answer for visitors who want a proper hotel. It has the widest range of places to stay within reach of the mine, and it sits beside the M2 interchange, so it also works on the way back to Islamabad or Lahore.

The distance depends on who you ask: about 33 km on one distance calculator and about 50 km in a travel guide, so allow roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Check the route on your phone before you leave.

  • TDCP Resort Kallar Kahar. The Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab runs a lakeside resort a few minutes' drive from the interchange. Its page describes rooms, a dining hall, a barbecue area, Wi-Fi, parking and a mosque. Book through TDCP and confirm current rates, because they have changed over time.
  • Private hotels and guest houses. Tripadvisor lists several in Kallar Kahar. Quality varies, so read recent reviews and ask about heating or cooling, as winters are cold and summers hot.

Our Kallar Kahar guide covers the lake, Takht-e-Babri and what to do if you stay.

Staying in Jhelum

Jhelum is a proper city with a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and fuel, and it sits on the Grand Trunk Road. Distances to the mine are reported at roughly 37 to 45 km, which suggests an hour's drive. It makes sense if you are arriving by GT Road or combining Khewra with other Jhelum sights, which our guide to places to visit in Jhelum lists.

Tripadvisor includes a Jhelum Inn Hotel with consistently good reviews for cleanliness, about 74 km from the mine centre by that listing, which is further than other sources suggest. Check the distance yourself before choosing a hotel on the strength of its location.

Staying in Pind Dadan Khan

Pind Dadan Khan is the closest town, about 6 km south of the mine on the River Jhelum, with a 2017 census population of about 30,000. It is the shortest drive to the ticket counter. Its facilities are those of a small town: guest houses and basic hotels rather than resorts, and you may find food choices limited.

It suits travellers who want to be at the gate when it opens and who are comfortable with simple rooms. Our guide to Pind Dadan Khan covers the town. Phone ahead, because small guest houses are not always easy to find online.

Staying in Chakwal

Chakwal is roughly 45 to 55 km north via Choa Saidan Shah, with several hotels listed on Tripadvisor. It is a sensible base if you are heading on to Kallar Kahar or Katas Raj, which lies between the town and the mine.

Booking tips

  • Book ahead for weekends, Eid and long holidays. The Salt Range is a popular weekend break from Islamabad and Lahore, and the better rooms go first.
  • Confirm what is included. Ask about breakfast, hot water and heating, and whether the room has its own bathroom.
  • Phone the property. Small hotels often have prices and availability that online listings don't show.
  • Check the mine's own hours and ticket arrangements before you finalise your dates. Our Khewra ticket price guide covers current fees.
  • Plan your arrival. Aim to reach the mine in the morning, when there are fewer groups.
