The best-known hareesa in Lahore is at Amritsari Hareesa on Nisbat Road, near Gawalmandi and Lakshmi Chowk, where the same family has cooked it since the 1960s and serves it with finger kebabs and a pour of desi ghee. For siri paye, the old-city institution is Phajja at Taxali Gate, open since 1953. Both are winter food: heavy, slow-cooked and at their best on a cold morning.

This guide covers what Lahori hareesa is, where to eat it, how it fits with siri paye and the other winter dishes of the old city, and how to plan a winter food morning. Our separate guide to paye in Lahore goes deeper into the paye houses.

What is Lahori hareesa?

Hareesa is a slow-cooked porridge of meat, wheat and lentils, cooked for hours until the grains and meat break down into one thick, smooth mass. In Lahore it is finished with sizzling desi ghee and served with seekh or finger kebabs pressed into the top, and eaten with tandoori naan.

Lahore's best-known hareesa has Amritsari roots: the recipe at the city's most famous shop came with cooks who settled in Lahore after Partition. It is richer and more heavily spiced than the hareesa of Peshawar's Qissa Khwani Bazaar, which our Peshawar breakfast guide describes, and quite different from the plain harissa of Gilgit-Baltistan.

It is a dish for cold weather. A plate is heavy enough to keep you going until evening, which is why it is a winter breakfast, though many Lahoris eat it for dinner too.

Where is the best hareesa in Lahore?

Amritsari Hareesa, Nisbat Road

Amritsari Hareesa is at 37 Nisbat Road, in Qila Gujar Singh between Gawalmandi and Lakshmi Chowk. It was started about sixty years ago by Haji Sirajdin, who named it after his home city and learned the recipe from Sadruddin, credited with bringing hareesa to post-Partition Lahore. His son Haji Riaz took over in 1989, and a grandson now runs a second counter a few steps from the original.

The hareesa is cooked in a huge cauldron for at least five hours. You can order beef, mutton or desi chicken hareesa, and the plate comes topped with finger kebabs and ghee. A 2021 profile gave its hours as about 5:30 am to 1:30 am, and recent listings show it open until around 2 am.

Because of its fame, other shops nearby use similar names. If you want the original, ask for the Haji Riaz shop on Nisbat Road.

Capri, Liberty Market

If you are staying in Gulberg, Capri in Liberty Market serves hareesa alongside halwa puri, nihari and naan chanay, in a more comfortable sit-down setting. It is the easy family option.

Delivery

Several kitchens now sell hareesa for delivery across Lahore, often fried with kebabs and a ghee tarka. It is convenient on a smoggy day, but it is not the same as eating it hot from the cauldron in the old city.

Where can you eat siri paye in Lahore?

Siri paye is the other great winter breakfast of the old city: trotters (paye) and head meat (siri) simmered overnight into a thick, gelatinous gravy, eaten with naan.

  • Phajja Siri Paye, near Taxali Gate. Run by the family of Fazal Din since 1953, it opens before sunrise, from about 5:15 am, and is famous for its rich gravy. It is the name every Lahori knows.
  • Fazal-e-Haq Siri Paye, at Chowk Heera Mandi, is listed by the Walled City of Lahore Authority among the old city's siri paye houses.

Our Lahore paye guide covers these and the Sultanpura lanes in more detail, including what to order.

What else do Lahoris eat in winter?

The old city has a short list of dishes that come into their own in the cold months:

  • Nihari, slow-cooked beef shank, at Haji Nihari Wala in Lohari Gate, listed by the Walled City Authority.
  • Doodh jalebi, hot jalebi dunked in warm milk, in the Gawalmandi area.
  • Kashmiri chai, pink and topped with nuts, at old-city tea shops; our chai guide has more.
  • Gajar ka halwa and sarson ka saag, at home and on restaurant menus through the cold months.

How do you plan a winter food morning?

  1. Start early. Be at Taxali Gate by 7 am for siri paye at Phajja, before the best of the pot is gone.
  2. Walk or rickshaw to Nisbat Road for a plate of hareesa, either the same morning if you have the appetite or later in the day.
  3. Finish with lassi or doodh jalebi in Gawalmandi.
  4. Spend the middle of the day walking the walled city. Our walled city guide suggests a route.

Lahore in winter brings fog and smog, especially from November to January. Check the air quality before an early morning out, and wear a mask if it is bad. Our Lahore in winter guide covers what to expect.

Is it worth it?

Hareesa and siri paye are two of the most Lahori things you can eat, and they cost little. They suit anyone who likes rich, meaty food and does not mind basic old-city settings.

They are heavy, though, and not for everyone. If you are with young children, older parents or anyone with a sensitive stomach, share a single plate, or go to Capri in Gulberg instead. For lighter breakfasts and a broader food plan, see our experiences page.
