What is Karachi special falooda?
Karachi's falooda is a dessert drink served in a tall glass. Dawn described the city's "special falooda" in 2024 as sweet vermicelli noodles topped with two flavours of ice cream, milk, red and green syrup, chopped dry fruit and assorted canned fruit. Basil seeds (tukh malanga), jelly and rose syrup often go in too.
There are a few variations to know:
- Special falooda: the full tall glass with ice cream and toppings.
- Sada falooda: a simpler, cheaper glass with less on top.
- Kulfi falooda: kulfi cut into a bowl with noodles and syrup. This is the Lahore way, and it has caught on in Karachi.
- Rabri falooda: falooda finished with thick rabri instead of, or as well as, ice cream.
Where is the best falooda in Karachi?
Saddar: Peshawari Ice Cream
Peshawari Ice Cream on Preedy Street in Saddar, a short walk from Empress Market, is often called Karachi's oldest ice cream shop. It says it has served the city since 1948, and it now lists a Bahadurabad location as well. When a Dawn writer went looking for the city's best falooda in 2024, this was where the writer finally found the tall glass of falooda they had been looking for.
Many shops across Karachi use the Peshawari name, so if you want the original, go to Saddar. A special falooda under the Peshawari name is listed at about PKR 420 on delivery apps in 2026. Our guide to Peshawari ice cream tells the story of the parlour, and our Empress Market guide helps you combine it with the market.
Bahadurabad: Rajoo Ice Cream
Rajoo Ice Cream (also spelt Rajjo) in Bahadurabad is the name Karachi food groups recommend most often for falooda, and it also does Peshawari-style ice cream and mango desserts. Its delivery listing prices a special falooda at about PKR 500 and a sada falooda at about PKR 420 in 2026. Bahadurabad is busy in the evening, so it pairs well with chaat nearby.
Saddar and beyond: Baloch Ice Cream
Baloch Ice Cream started in Saddar, near Bohri Bazaar, and now also has branches in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 6 and Boat Basin. Its falooda has a loyal following. Our Bohri Bazaar guide covers the shopping around the original shop.
Burns Road, Dhoraji and the sweet shops
Dilshad Kulfi House on Burns Road, open since 1969, is the place for matka kulfi falooda. Dhoraji's Ghazi Salahuddin Road sells ice cream falooda alongside its famous gola ganda, which our gola ganda and kulfi guide covers. Sweet shop chains such as Rehmat-e-Shereen and Qasr-e-Shireen do kulfi falooda in their branches across the city.
Where can you eat good rabri in Karachi?
Rabri is milk boiled for hours until it thickens, sweetened, and layered with the cream skimmed off the top. In Karachi, one name dominates.
Delhi Rabri House began on Burns Road (Shahrah-e-Liaquat), and that is still the branch to visit if you can. It now has branches in Bahadurabad, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad and DHA's Badar Commercial. The shop's own pages give rabri from PKR 220 a serving in 2026, with pista rabri and sugar-free rabri also on the menu; delivery apps charge a little more. You can also buy it by the kilo to take home.
Our Burns Road food street guide covers the other old-city specialists, and the street makes it easy to have rabri after nihari or fry kabab. For other milk sweets, see our guide to traditional sweets of Pakistan.
What does falooda cost in Karachi?
In 2026, a sada falooda costs about PKR 400 and a special falooda about PKR 420 to 500 at the well-known ice cream shops, going by their delivery listings. A plate of rabri starts at about PKR 220. Delivery-app prices are often a little higher than at the counter. Prices change often, so treat these as a guide.
When should you go, and is it safe?
Falooda is a hot-weather treat, and Karachi's ice cream shops are busiest on summer evenings. Under the federal closing rules reissued in September 2026, restaurants and food outlets close by 11 pm for dine-in, with takeaway exempt (Dawn), so go before about 10 pm.
Milk desserts spoil quickly in Karachi's heat, so choose busy shops with working fridges. Rabri should be cold and fresh, not left on the counter. If you are taking it home, ask for it packed with ice and refrigerate it as soon as you can. Our guide to whether street food in Pakistan is safe has more general advice.
