Faisalabad to Murree is about 375 km by road, and the quickest route is motorway nearly all the way: the M-4 north to Pindi Bhattian, the M-2 to Islamabad, then the Murree Expressway up the hill. Journey planners show a little over four hours of driving. We would plan on five to six hours door to door with a stop, and more on a summer weekend or public holiday, when the last stretch into Murree can be slow.
This guide sets out the route, the distances you can rely on, tolls, where to stop, the fog and traffic problems that change the timing, and what to do about the long day. It is written for people driving their own car from Faisalabad; for the final climb, our Islamabad to Murree guide and Murree Expressway guide go into more detail.

What is the route from Faisalabad to Murree?
- Join the M-4 at Faisalabad. The M-4 runs from Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian, where it meets the M-2. The Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad section opened in 2003.
- Turn north on the M-2 at Pindi Bhattian. The M-2 is a six-lane motorway that runs through the Salt Range towards Islamabad. Interchanges on the way include Kallar Kahar, Balkassar, Chakri and Thalian, which serves the airport.
- Leave the motorway at Islamabad. The M-2 ends at the Islamabad interchange, which connects to the M-1.
- Follow signs for Murree. From the capital, the usual way up is the Murree Expressway, the Islamabad to Murree road that continues on towards Bhurban and Kohala.
Subtracting the Faisalabad to Islamabad figure (about 325 km) from the journey-planner total (about 375 km) leaves roughly 50 km for the Islamabad to Murree leg, which is the slowest part of the trip because of the climb and traffic.
You do not need to go through Lahore: Pindi Bhattian is the junction where the M-4 meets the M-2.
How long does it really take?
A journey planner gives a little over four hours. That is an empty-road figure, so build in time for:
- a fuel and prayer stop at a motorway service area (about 20 to 30 minutes);
- the slow climb from Islamabad to Murree, which is steep and busy in the season;
- any queue at the Murree entry points on busy days.
For an honest plan, we would say five to six hours on an ordinary day. On Eid, Independence Day weekend or during snowfall, it can take much longer, and in July 2026 reports described the Murree Expressway paralysed by weekend traffic.
If you are leaving at dawn, you should reach Islamabad by mid-morning and Murree around lunchtime. If you leave in the afternoon, you will arrive in the dark on a hill road that is unfamiliar to many drivers.
Tolls and M-Tag
The National Highway Authority revised toll rates from 10 July 2026. For cars, PakWheels reported Rs 1,430 for the M-2, Rs 1,350 for the M-4 and Rs 400 for the Islamabad to Murree dual carriageway. Those first two are full-length rates for the whole motorway. You will travel only part of each, so your charge from Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian and from Pindi Bhattian to Islamabad will be lower. We cannot give an exact total. Check the figure at the toll plaza, keep some cash, and see our guide to M-Tag on Pakistan's motorways.
Tolls are revised from time to time, so treat all figures as a 2026 guide.
Where to stop
The M-2 has service areas on both sides roughly every 60 to 80 km, with fuel, food, mosques and workshops. Our guide to the best rest areas on Pakistan motorways can help you choose. A sensible plan is to fuel up before leaving Faisalabad, stop once on the M-2, and fill up again in Islamabad before the climb.
If you want a longer break, the Kallar Kahar interchange takes you to the Salt Range. Do not make that detour if you are already behind schedule.
Fog and winter driving
Winter fog is the biggest reason a Faisalabad to Murree plan fails. In January 2026, dense fog led to partial closures on the M-2, M-3 and M-4, including the M-4 from Shershah to Pindi Bhattian. The Pakistan Meteorological Department expected fog to persist on the M-2 and the M-4 between Pindi Bhattian and Faisalabad. Fog-related closures are common between December and February.
If you plan to drive in winter:
- check the National Highways and Motorway Police and PMD fog updates before you leave;
- avoid very early starts, when fog is densest;
- be ready to wait at a toll plaza or to use another route if the motorway is closed;
- read our guide to motorway fog closures.
Snow is the other winter problem, but it affects the last stretch. Murree itself can be busy and restricted after snowfall, so check the latest police advice before driving up. In summer, Murree Police have advised using the Murree Expressway rather than the old GT Road, which has had repair work, and they suggest checking live traffic and the Safe Tourism Murree app.
Should you drive in one day?
Faisalabad to Murree can be done in a day. A day trip is possible but not relaxing: ten to twelve hours on the road for a few hours in the hills is a lot, especially with children.
A better plan is to stay overnight, ideally midweek. That gives you a full day in the hills and avoids returning in the dark. Our Murree itinerary and best time to visit Murree will help you choose when to go. For a fuller view of the options, see our general travel guide.
If one of the drivers is tired by Islamabad, do not push on up the hill. Rest first.
