Easter in Pakistan is a church festival, kept mainly by the country's Christian minority with Good Friday services, an Easter Sunday morning mass or worship, and family meals afterwards. The big city cathedrals in Lahore and Karachi are where most people go. In 2026 Easter Sunday fell on 5 April, and in 2027 it falls on 28 March. Western Easter follows the Gregorian calendar, so it does not depend on moon sighting.

There are no street fairs or public displays to find, and the day is not a general public holiday. If you are a visitor, the useful questions are which churches to look at, how to attend respectfully, and how security works around services. This guide covers those.

Where is Easter celebrated in Pakistan?

Every major city has Easter services, and so do many Punjab villages with large Christian communities. Fides, the Catholic news agency, reports Holy Week liturgies, especially Good Friday and Easter Sunday, drawing large crowds from Lahore and Karachi to remote villages, with churches decorated with flowers and choirs singing.

In Lahore, two cathedrals are the best known, and they belong to different churches:

  • Sacred Heart Cathedral on the Mall/Lawrence Road is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lahore. It was consecrated in 1907 and designed in a Roman Byzantine style by a Belgian architect (Wikipedia). Catholics held a Good Friday Mass here on 3 April 2026.
  • Cathedral Church of the Resurrection on the Mall, opposite the Lahore High Court, is the seat of the Church of Pakistan's Diocese of Lahore. It was consecrated in 1887, built of pink sandstone in a neo-Gothic style (Wikipedia).

In Karachi the equivalents are St Patrick's Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral near Empress Market in Saddar, completed in 1881 and able to hold about 1,500 people, and Holy Trinity Cathedral on Fatima Jinnah Road near Zainab Market, a Church of Pakistan cathedral dedicated in 1855.

What happens during Holy Week

For Catholics and many Protestants the pattern is familiar. Lent comes first, with fasting, prayer and charity. Good Friday is a solemn service. Easter Sunday is the main celebration, with a morning mass or service, choirs, and flags and lights outside the church (The Nation). Families then share a meal at home.

Some parishes hold a pre-dawn procession or prayer service on Sunday morning. In 2026 one such service in Wazirabad, near Gujranwala, was struck by a speeding truck at about 3:30 am, killing one man and injuring over 60. Police are treating it as reckless driving, and some community members suspect it was deliberate (International Christian Concern, April 2026). The case is a reminder that a pre-dawn procession on an unclosed road is an exposed gathering.

Service times differ from parish to parish and we could not find a published citywide schedule. The church office or parish noticeboard is the place to ask.

Is Easter a public holiday in Pakistan?

Not in the way Eid is. Calendar sites list Good Friday and Easter Sunday as optional holidays, which employees may choose from a limited list, and say Easter Sunday is a regional holiday for Christian employees in Sindh government offices. The official federal and provincial notifications are the final word, and they change each year, so check the current one. For how holidays affect travel and closures see our guide to public holidays in Pakistan.

For visitors, this means shops, restaurants and roads run normally, though Christian-run schools, offices and some businesses may close or shorten hours.

Security at Easter services

Churches have been targeted before. On Easter Sunday, 27 March 2016, a suicide bomber killed at least 75 people at the entrance of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore, where many Christian families had gone for the holiday (Wikipedia). Since then, larger churches get police presence at Easter, with checkpoints, armed personnel and CCTV. In 2026 the government said it had made strict security arrangements at churches nationwide (The Nation).

Father Lazar Aslam told Fides that the police presence offers some protection but also reminds the community of its vulnerability. What this means for you:

  • Expect searches and queues at cathedral gates, and carry your CNIC.
  • Arrive early and leave the bag behind. Large bags may be refused.
  • Check local news and ask the church before going to a service. Security can mean access is limited to the congregation on the day.
  • Overseas visitors: read your own government's current advice for Lahore and Karachi before travelling, since it can affect insurance. Our Lahore safety guide covers the wider picture for visitors.

Can visitors attend an Easter service?

Many churches welcome respectful visitors, but security makes it harder than it once was, and a service is not a tourist attraction. Ask the parish before turning up, or go with a Christian friend or colleague. If you attend:

  • Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Women often cover their heads in church, though practice varies.
  • Sit quietly, switch off your phone and do not photograph worshippers or the altar without permission.
  • In a Catholic mass, visitors who are not Catholic usually stay seated at communion.
  • A simple "Happy Easter" is usually welcome. Fides reports that some Muslim neighbours extend good wishes while others are indifferent, so take your cue from the person in front of you.

If you cannot get into a service, visit the cathedrals on a quiet weekday and see the buildings. Our Lahore seasons guide helps with timing a visit, and our experiences page has more ideas for cultural travel. For the other major Christian festival, see our Christmas in Pakistan guide.

Is it worth planning a trip around Easter?

Probably not on its own. It is a family and church occasion, and the experience is mostly inside the congregation, so outsiders see little. It suits readers curious about Pakistan's Christian history or who have local Christian friends. If you want public seasonal events in Punjab at roughly the same time, Vaisakhi in Pakistan in mid-April is a different kind of gathering, a Sikh pilgrimage with its own access rules.
