Islamabad is one of the more cycling-friendly cities in Pakistan: wide, tree-lined avenues, a small but growing network of dedicated tracks, and the Margalla Hills right at the city's edge for anyone who wants a real climb. Weekend riders generally split between easy laps of the parks and lakes and the harder Margalla Road route up towards the hills.

This guide covers the main routes, where the dedicated cycling tracks are, how to find a group ride, and what to be careful of on shared roads.

Dedicated cycling tracks

Islamabad has built a handful of purpose-built cycling tracks, separate from general traffic, though they are short and scattered rather than a connected network:

  • Shahra-e-Dastoor, opened in 2016, was the city's first dedicated cycling track.
  • F-8 Park has a roughly 900-metre track.
  • Gomal Road in Sector E-7 has a 700-metre track with a parallel jogging path.
  • Faisal Avenue has a more recently built track with night lighting, aimed at commuting and evening riders.

These are good for a short, safe spin, warming up, or riding with children, but none of them is long enough to be a full workout on its own.

Margalla Road: the classic climbing route

Margalla Road, running along the base of the hills, is the route most serious cyclists in Islamabad ride. It climbs steadily towards Daman-e-Koh and, further on, Pir Sohawa, with sweeping views over the city opening up as you gain height. It is a genuine test for road and gravel riders, and a popular loop for weekend groups starting near F-9 Park's Khyber Gate.

The catch is that Margalla Road is a normal public road shared with cars, jeeps and motorcycles, and traffic picks up at weekends when people drive up for the same views. Ride on the correct side, stay visible, and treat blind bends with real caution, especially on the descent.

Easy loops: Rawal Lake and Lake View Park

For a gentler ride, or for families and beginners, the paths around Rawal Lake and inside Lake View Park are flatter and quieter than Margalla Road. Lake View Park has its own cycling and jogging tracks separate from car traffic, which makes it a sensible place to start if you or your children are new to riding in the city. See our guides to Rawal Lake and the Japanese Park for more on both areas.

F-9 Park and other city parks

F-9 Park has open paths that riders use informally alongside walkers and joggers, though it is not a dedicated cycling circuit in the way Lake View Park's tracks are. It works well for an easy morning ride combined with breakfast nearby. See our F-9 Park guide for layout and timings.

Longer rides: the Banigala loop and beyond

More experienced riders extend a day out into a longer loop towards Banigala, on the eastern edge of the city near Rawal Lake, or combine Margalla Road with a return via a different sector for extra distance. These longer routes involve more open road and less shade, so carry more water than you think you need and start early to avoid the midday heat for most of the year.

Group rides and clubs

If you are new to cycling in the city, the easiest way in is to join an organised ride rather than work out routes alone. The Islamabad Cycling Association and the Islamabad Cycling Club both organise weekend and holiday rides for a range of abilities, and groups such as MTB Islamabad focus on mountain biking. Riding with a group is safer on shared roads like Margalla Road, and it is a good way to borrow local knowledge about which stretches are busiest at a given time of day.

Bike rental

Formal bike-hire shops are limited in Islamabad compared with cities built around tourism. Most weekend riders use their own bikes, and someone new to the sport is generally better off asking a cycling club whether they can join a ride on a borrowed or club bike before buying their own. Check current availability with a club or a local bike shop rather than assuming rental is on offer at a park gate.

Safety on the road

  • Wear a helmet and use lights or reflective gear if you ride at dawn, dusk or in low light.
  • Ride early morning or evening in summer; the heat and glare in the middle of the day make longer rides unpleasant and riskier.
  • Watch for monkeys and stray dogs on the routes closest to the Margalla Hills; keep your distance and don't feed them.
  • Ride in a group on Margalla Road, especially for anyone new to the route, and keep well to the side on blind corners shared with cars.
  • Women riding alone may prefer the busier park routes (Lake View Park, F-9, Rawal Lake) over quieter hill roads, particularly outside daylight hours.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to cycle in Islamabad for beginners?

Rawal Lake and Lake View Park, both of which have flatter, quieter paths separate from the busiest traffic.

Is Margalla Road safe for cycling?

It is ridden regularly by experienced cyclists, but it is a shared public road with real traffic, especially at weekends. Ride with a group, keep to the side, and take care on bends, particularly on the descent.

Can I rent a bicycle in Islamabad?

Formal rental shops are limited. Most riders use their own bike, and joining a cycling club is often the easiest way to try a route before buying one.

Are there dedicated cycling tracks in Islamabad?

Yes, though they are short: Shahra-e-Dastoor, a track in F-8 Park, one on Gomal Road in E-7, and a newer, lit track on Faisal Avenue, along with the paths inside Lake View Park.

Is there a cycling club I can join in Islamabad?

Yes. The Islamabad Cycling Association and the Islamabad Cycling Club both run group rides for various skill levels, and MTB Islamabad focuses on mountain biking.
