The best chanay in Lahore are eaten early, from stalls that have been cooking the same pot for decades. Ghulam Rasool near Neela Gumbad, serving since 1948, is the best-known name; inside the walled city, the Walled City of Lahore Authority lists Bila Chana Wala at Delhi Gate, Bahu Murgh Chanay at Taxali Gate and Ghosia Chanay in Said Mitha Bazaar. For kulchay, the old-city speciality is das kulcha, sold on Sunday mornings at Chuna Mandi near Masti Gate.

This guide covers what Lahori chanay and kulchay are, the stalls worth crossing the city for, when to go, and how a chanay breakfast fits into a day in Lahore. For the wider breakfast picture, halwa puri and paye included, see our guide to nashta in Lahore.

What are Lahori chanay?

Lahori chanay are chickpeas slow-cooked in a thick, spiced gravy, usually with chicken (murgh chanay), mutton (mutton chanay) or egg (anda chanay). The chickpeas are cooked until soft enough to break with a piece of naan, and the gravy is darker and heavier than the chana you get with halwa puri.

They are eaten with a hot tandoori naan or kulcha from the tandoor next door, with raita, raw onion, green chilli and lemon on the side. A plate is cheap and filling, which is why chanay are the breakfast of labourers, students and shopkeepers as much as of families on a Sunday outing.

Kulcha in Lahore means a soft, leavened bread from the tandoor, slightly thicker than a naan. Das kulcha is something else: a kulcha served with spiced mashed potato, chickpeas, pickle and onion, a dish of the old city that few places still make.

Where are the best chanay in Lahore?

Ghulam Rasool, Neela Gumbad

Ghulam Rasool Chanay Wala is at Neela Gumbad, at the Mall Road end of Anarkali, and has been serving since 1948. It is known for chicken and mutton chanay with tandoori naan and for its spicy mutton kebabs. It is the easiest of the old names to reach, and it pairs well with a morning walk through Anarkali. Our Anarkali food guide covers the rest of the bazaar.

The walled city stalls

The Walled City of Lahore Authority's own food list names four murgh chanay stalls inside the old city:

  • Bila Chana Wala, inside Delhi Gate.
  • Bahu Murgh Chanay, at Taxali Gate.
  • Ghosia Chanay, in Said Mitha Bazaar. Food writers praise its black-pepper murgh chanay; it is a small roadside setup and gets crowded on Sundays.
  • Baba Phakoo, near Chowk Nogaza at Taxali Gate.

These are basic places: a pot, a tandoor, a few benches. Carry cash and expect to share a table.

Saleem Butt Mutton Chanay, Ganpat Road

A food cart on Ganpat Road off Anarkali, known for mutton chanay. There is no seating, and listings put it at about 7 am to 10 am only.

Jeela Chanay Wala, Shadbagh

On Amir Road in Shadbagh, serving since 1978, Jeela is known for chanay and paye. Listings give hours of about 6 am to noon.

Goga Naqeebia and other branches

Goga Naqeebia Murgh Chanay started on Model Town Circular Road and now has several branches, including one in Anarkali. Listings give the Model Town shop's hours as about 4:30 am to 4:30 pm, and it is more comfortable for families than a walled city stall.

Where can you find das kulcha?

Das kulcha is sold at Chuna Mandi Chowk near Masti Gate in the walled city, on Sunday mornings only, and it sells out. The Walled City Authority lists two makers: Mehar Das Kulcha and Muhammad Asad Das Kulcha in Chohatta Mufti Baqar. Stalls of this kind claim a history of around a hundred years. It is a once-a-week dish, so plan a Sunday around it and arrive early.

For plain kulcha and naan to go with chanay, Khalifa Naan Shop inside Delhi Gate is the old city's best-known bread shop.

Gulberg and the newer areas

If you are staying in Gulberg, DHA or Johar Town, you do not have to cross the city. Capri in Liberty Market, Gulberg, serves naan chanay alongside halwa puri, hareesa and nihari. Madina Murgh Chanay in Johar Town and Chacha Cheeka Desi Murgh Chanay in Township, open for over 40 years, are neighbourhood favourites with their own followings.

When should you go?

Chanay are a morning dish. Most stalls start before 7 am and the best pots are finished by 10 or 11 am, sooner on Sundays and public holidays. Some places in the newer areas serve into the afternoon; the old-city stalls do not. In Ramazan, timings shift towards sehri; our guide to Lahore in Ramadan covers that month.

What does a chanay breakfast cost?

A plate of chanay with naan is one of the cheapest meals in Lahore. Delivery listings in 2025 put plain chanay at roughly PKR 225 to 300 a plate, with murgh or mutton chanay costing more. Stall prices change often, so check the board or ask before ordering.

Is it worth getting up early for?

Yes, if you like spicy, heavy food and do not mind a basic setting. A chanay breakfast at a walled city stall is one of the most local things you can do in Lahore, and it suits groups of friends and anyone exploring the old city on foot.

It suits less well if you are with young children or older parents who need comfortable seating, or if you prefer mild food. In that case, go to Capri or a branch of Goga Naqeebia, or choose halwa puri instead: our guide to halwa puri in Lahore has the family-friendly options.
