For chai in Karachi, start with a Quetta hotel, the Pashtun-run dhabas that serve the city's strongest doodh patti for little money, often around the clock. For the old city, take tea in a pot at Cafe Durakhshan in Saddar or Khairabad Tea Shop, open since 1932. For a family evening, the open-air tea cafes of Defence, Bahadurabad and Tipu Sultan Road serve chai with stuffed parathas until late.

Karachi runs on tea. A hotel and restaurant association told The Express Tribune in 2025 that the city has more than 14,000 chai dhabas. This guide sorts the best-known by type, with what to order and what it costs.

What is a Quetta hotel?

In Karachi, the dhabas most people rate highest for tea are called Quetta hotels. The name comes from Quetta, because they are largely run by Pashtuns from that region, and a busy one can make more than 400 cups a day, Eater reported in 2018. Expect a small shop or a stall with plastic chairs, a huge pot of milky tea on the boil, and parathas with eggs or chana.

They open at first light for workers and students, and the busiest ones keep going into the night. Quetta Shinar in Clifton, opened in 1990, was running around the clock when Eater visited. By day its customers eat and go; at night they sit and talk.

What to order:

  • Doodh patti, tea brewed in milk rather than water, sweet and strong.
  • A paratha with an omelette, or a plain paratha with malai and sugar.

Our guide to Pakistani tea culture explains the main kinds of tea.

Where can you drink chai in the car?

Karachi's drive-up habit started at places like Cafe Clifton, a classic dhaba where people park and have frothy doodh patti brought to the car. Eater described it in 2018 as the place one tea-cafe founder and his friends drove to before they opened their own. A 2026 round-up still lists it among the city's late-night tea stops.

Quetta Alamgir on Alamgir Road, Bahadurabad, is the high-energy version: open-air seating, plastic chairs under the sky and a late crowd, according to a 2026 round-up.

Where are the old Irani tea houses?

Karachi once had more than a hundred Irani cafes. Fewer than ten remain, and they are the best places for a slow pot of tea.

  • Khairabad Tea Shop opened in 1932 and is run by the founder's grandson. A 1947 photograph shows Jinnah's motorcade passing its door.
  • Cafe Durakhshan and Pehlvi Restaurant, side by side at M.A. Jinnah Road and Zaibunnisa Street in Saddar, serve tea in a pot with sugar and a jug of milk, or from a chainak at Pehlvi's stall. Durakhshan's spicy pulao is the dish to order with it.
  • Cafe Victory in Uni Plaza has run for more than 55 years and was long the lunch spot of journalists.

Go by day. Our Saddar food guide covers the area around them.

Which tea cafes are best for families?

From about 2012 a new kind of tea place spread through Defence and Clifton: open plots with plastic tables, truck-art walls, valet parking and menus of "disco chai", Nutella parathas and pizza parathas. Chai Master and Chai Wala were early names. They took the dhaba idea and made it comfortable for families and for women, who often feel unwelcome at men-only roadside dhabas.

Names in recent round-ups (2025 and 2026):

  • Chai Shai, Zulfiqar Commercial, DHA Phase 8: truck art, fairy lights, Nutella and pizza parathas.
  • Chai Chatt, Tipu Sultan Road: many chai flavours plus khausay, kachori and matka biryani.
  • Das Numberi, open since 2021, with branches on Seaview Road and Tipu Sultan Road: tea, rolls and burgers.
  • Fibbi Cafe, in DHA, Clifton and several malls: known for zafrani chai.
  • My Chai, Block 18 Gulistan-e-Johar: a neat, modern setting and slow-brewed dum chai.

These places come and go faster than dhabas, so check the map before you set out.

How much does chai cost in Karachi?

A 2026 round-up put a visit to a street dhaba at about PKR 100 to 350 per person, a truck-art tea cafe at PKR 200 to 700, and a polished tea lounge at PKR 400 to 1,000 or more. Prices change with milk and sugar costs, and a cup on its own at a dhaba is the cheapest thing on the menu. Carry cash at dhabas.

When is chai available, and what are the rules on late nights?

Dhabas open at daybreak, and the evening is when tea cafes fill. In Ramazan the rhythm changes: tea cafes fill after iftar and stay busy late into the night.

Two things affect late nights in 2025 and 2026:

  1. Footpath crackdowns. In late 2025 and early 2026 the city sealed hundreds of dhabas and eateries for putting chairs on footpaths.
  2. Closing hours. Under federal fuel-saving rules issued in September 2026 for three months, restaurants and eateries are asked to close by 11 pm, with takeaway exempt. Provinces apply such rules differently, so check what is open before a late drive.

Which chai spot suits you?

  • For the real thing: any busy Quetta hotel near you, at breakfast.
  • For history: Khairabad Tea Shop or Cafe Durakhshan, by day.
  • For a late cup in the car: Cafe Clifton.
  • For families and groups: Chai Shai, Chai Chatt or Das Numberi.

If you want coffee rather than chai, our best cafes in Karachi guide covers that. For more evening ideas, see things to do in Karachi at night and our experiences page.
