What does a budget room in Skardu cost?
These are rough bands from what Skardu properties were charging on Booking.com in September 2026, converted from dollars at roughly PKR 280. Treat them as a sense of scale: prices change with the season, the day of the week and how full the town is.
- Under PKR 3,000. Simple guesthouse rooms, sometimes with a shared bathroom or a basic attached one. Fine for a night or two if the reviews are good and recent.
- PKR 3,000 to 5,000. The sweet spot for most budget travellers: an attached bathroom with hot water, a proper bed, Wi-Fi and often a garden or terrace. Many of Skardu's best-reviewed guesthouses sit here in quiet weeks.
- PKR 5,000 to 8,000. Small hotels and the better guesthouses, with more reliable hot water, sometimes a restaurant, and sometimes a mountain view.
- Around PKR 8,500. The average three-star room. If a budget room costs close to this, compare it with the three-star places before you book.

What's included in a cheap room, and what isn't
Budget prices in Skardu usually cover the room and not much else. Ask about each of these before you pay:
- Breakfast. Sometimes included, often not. If it isn't, ask what it costs, or plan to eat in the bazaar.
- Hot water. Ask whether it is available all day or only at set times, and whether it is gas, electric or solar. Electric geysers are useless in a power cut.
- Heating. From October to April this matters more than anything else. Ask how the room is heated and whether heating costs extra. A cheap room with no heater is a false saving in November.
- Power backup. Power cuts are common in Skardu, especially in winter. A generator, UPS or solar system keeps the lights and Wi-Fi on.
- Wi-Fi. Most places list it, and most have it, but speeds vary with the connection and the power supply.
- Parking. Usually free, which matters if you are driving your own car.
- Extra mattress. For families sharing a room, ask the price of an extra bed or mattress up front.

In town, just off the bazaar
This is where the cheapest good rooms are. Guesthouses on the side roads around the centre are close to restaurants and shops but usually quieter than the main road. Staying central saves on taxis and on hotel restaurant prices, which matters as much as the room rate.
Airport Road and the Katpana side
Several newer guesthouses and small resorts sit along the road out towards the airport and the Katpana dunes. They are handy for an early flight and for sunset at the dunes, and some have more space and better views than places in town. You will need a car or taxi for everything else.
Kachura
Kachura is where the lake resorts are, and most of them are not budget places. There are simpler guesthouses in Kachura village that usually cost much less than the resorts, and you still wake up near the lakes. The trade-off is 35 to 45 minutes' drive to town and fewer places to eat.
Shigar
Guesthouses in Shigar cost much less than a night in the restored fort, and you get the same quiet village and orchards. It works for a night or two at the end of a trip rather than as a base.
How to book a budget room without regret
- Read the most recent reviews, not the overall score. Guesthouses change hands and standards, and a review from two summers ago tells you little.
- Look at guests' own photos of the room and bathroom, not only the listing's.
- Check the location on a map. "Skardu" on a listing can mean the bazaar or a village 20 km out.
- Confirm by phone or WhatsApp. Ask the questions above, and get the price, the dates and what is included in writing.
- Keep deposits small. Pay the balance on arrival, once you have seen the room.
- Ask for a better rate for three nights or more, and outside peak weeks. Small places may be flexible.
- Ask about airport pick-up. Many guesthouses will arrange a car if you ask; agree the price when you book.
When are budget rooms hardest to find?
- July and August, and above all long weekends, Eid and 14 August. The cheapest good rooms go weeks ahead; book as soon as your dates are fixed.
- June and September are easier, apart from holiday weekends.

Budget room or something better?
A budget room in Skardu suits couples, groups of friends, students and anyone on a road trip who is out all day and needs a clean bed, hot water and somewhere safe to park. Spend your money on the jeep for Deosai rather than the lobby.
Spend a little more if you are travelling in winter, with small children or with older parents. A reliable heater, hot water that works in a power cut and a ground-floor room are worth several thousand rupees a night to them. The same applies if you arrive on a morning flight and want a quiet room to rest in at 2,200 metres.
