Bilamik Valley is a green, forested side valley in Rondu, on the left bank of the Indus, reached by a 4x4 jeep track that climbs from near Dambudas village on the Jaglot–Skardu road. From Skardu it is roughly 70 to 80 km on the main road to Dambudas, then a rough one and a half to three hours by jeep, depending on which guide you read. The usual season is April or May to October, with June to September the most reliable.

Few people write about Bilamik in detail, and the published figures for altitude and times disagree. This guide gives the ranges, tells you what is consistent across sources, and says where you should ask locally before you go.

Where is Bilamik Valley and how do you get there?

Bilamik lies in Rondu, the gorge-like stretch of the Indus valley between Skardu and Haramosh. The main approach is the Jaglot–Skardu road, the paved route that runs between Gilgit and Skardu. About 20 km after the Astak Nala point and just before Dambudas, a jeep track leaves the road, crosses the Indus on the Dambudas suspension bridge and climbs through hairpins towards the valley.

Small cars cannot make the climb. The valley is almost on the top of the mountains, as one guide puts it, and you need a 4x4 jeep. Hire one in Skardu, or ask your hotel to arrange a driver who knows the track. For planning the paved part, see our notes on Skardu road conditions, and for the Gilgit side, Gilgit to Skardu distance.

How long does it take?

Plan a full day. The sources agree on the shape of the trip but not the clock:

  • Skardu to Dambudas: about 70 to 80 km, roughly 2 hours.
  • Dambudas to Bilamik by jeep: between about 1.5 and 3 hours, one guide describing the track as rugged hairpins.
  • Total from Skardu: about 3 hours by one guide, longer by others.

Take the longer figure when you plan, and start early so that the jeep is back on the main road before dark. A day trip is possible but tight; most people who want to enjoy the meadows camp for a night.

How high is Bilamik, and what is it like?

Altitude is where sources disagree most: one puts the valley at about 2,400 m, another at about 3,500 m. Do not rely on either number, and take the altitude seriously if you plan to stay.

What the guides do agree on is the character of the place. It is greener than the dry country around Skardu, with forest, meadows, streams and springs, and Rondu gets more rainfall than much of Baltistan. People speak both Balti and Shina in the valley. Wildlife mentioned includes marmots, golden eagles and Himalayan snowcock, and walkers can head for the Kutia Lungma glacier or, with a guide, for the Stak La pass at about 4,600 m.

When to go

The jeep track is practical from about April or May to October. June to September is when the road is most reliable and the meadows are at their greenest. One guide gives average summer temperatures of about 15 degrees Celsius. Winter brings sub-zero temperatures, and the roads are often closed, so winter is not a time to plan a trip here.

Rain makes the track worse. Ask locally in Skardu before you set out. See the best time to visit Skardu for the wider season picture.

Where to stay at Bilamik

There are no hotels to rely on. Guides describe camping in the meadows and basic facilities only, and homestays in nearby villages are mentioned. If you want comfort, stay in Skardu and treat Bilamik as a long day out. If you camp, bring everything: food, warm sleeping gear and a stove, and tell someone at your Skardu hotel when you expect to be back. See camping in Skardu for the general checklist.

What it costs

One 2025 travel guide gives about PKR 12,000 to 15,000 for a round-trip jeep from Skardu. Prices are agreed with the driver and change with season and demand, so treat this as a guide, not a quote. For how jeep fares work in a neighbouring valley, our post on Basho Valley jeep rent explains what to agree before you set off.

Is it safe?

Rondu and the Jaglot–Skardu road are in Gilgit-Baltistan, which is not on the UK government's list of areas it advises against. The main risks are the track itself: steep hairpins, rain and rockfall. Read our guide to jeep track safety in the northern areas, choose an experienced driver and avoid the track after heavy rain. Foreign visitors should check their own government's current advice.

Is Bilamik worth the day?

If you have a spare day, enjoy rough tracks and want a green valley without crowds, yes. If you only have a short time around Skardu, Shigar, Upper Kachura and Deosai give you more for the hours. Our page on day trips from Skardu compares them, and the Skardu destination page covers the base.
