The best time to visit Fairy Meadows is from June to September, when the path from Tato is clear of snow, the meadow is green, and the lodges are open. Within that window, late June and September are the sweet spots: quieter than July and August, with less monsoon rain on the roads and a good chance of seeing Nanga Parbat clear. May and early October can work if you are ready for snow on the path and nights below freezing.

June to September: the main season
This is when everything works. The jeep runs daily, the path from Tato is dry, the lodges are open, and the walks to Beyal and the Nanga Parbat viewpoint are free of snow for most of the period. Days on the meadow are mild, in the mid to high teens Celsius, and nights are cold but not bitter. The details are in our Fairy Meadows weather guide.
Each month has its own character:
- June starts with snow still on the upper paths and the meadow turning green. By the second half of the month the trail to Beyal is usually clear, and the crowds have not yet peaked.
- July is the warmest month and the greenest, with wildflowers on the meadow and the most people. It also brings the start of the monsoon, with afternoon showers and cloud.
- August is similar to July, busy and warm, with a continuing risk of landslides on the KKH and the jeep track after heavy rain.
- September is often the best month of all. The monsoon has passed, the air is clearer, the lodges are quieter, and nights are colder. By late September frost is possible.
Spring: May and early June
In May the meadow is usually still partly under snow, and the path from Tato can take much longer than in summer, with deep snow in places. Nights drop to around freezing, and the higher walks to Beyal and beyond are often snowed over. Not every lodge may be open yet, so check before you go.
The reward is a quiet meadow, with the mountain and the forest white with snow. May suits fit adults with warm clothing and flexible plans. It is not a good choice for young children or older parents, for whom a cold, slippery walk and freezing nights are hard going.
Autumn: late September and October
Late September and the first days of October are the other quiet window. The air after the monsoon is often very clear, which is why autumn is prized for mountain views across the north, and the forest and meadow are far quieter than in July.
The trade-off is cold. Nights fall to around freezing in October, the first snow can arrive on the higher ground at any time, and the lodges begin to close for the winter. Go in early October only if you can move your dates, and check with your lodge that it is still open. From mid-October the risk of arriving to snow and closed rooms grows every week.

Winter: November to April
From November to April the meadow is under snow, most lodges are shut, and the walk from Tato becomes a snow trek. A small number of experienced groups do go in winter, with everything arranged in advance, but it is not a trip for families or first-time visitors, and not one to attempt on your own.
Getting there is harder too. The Babusar Pass is closed through the winter, which leaves only the longer KKH route from Islamabad, and winter conditions on the KKH add their own delays.
When is Fairy Meadows most crowded?
The meadow is busiest on:
- Eid holidays that fall in the season
- The 14 August holiday and the days around it
- Weekends in July and August, when university groups and families from the cities arrive together
- School summer holidays in general
At these times the jeeps are in heavy demand, the best cottages are booked well ahead, and the meadow can be noisy late into the night. If you can only travel then, book your room early, start from Raikot Bridge in the morning rather than the afternoon, and plan the walk to Beyal for early the next day before the day walkers set out.
Weekdays in late June and September are the quietest times of the main season.
Seeing Nanga Parbat clear
Most people go to Fairy Meadows for one view, and the mountain does not always show itself. Some practical points:
- Mornings are the best bet. Cloud tends to build over the mountain as the day warms, so the clearest views are usually at first light.
- Two nights give you a second chance. With one night you get one evening and one morning. With two, a cloudy day matters much less.
- September is often clearest. After the monsoon, the air is drier and cleaner.
- July and August are the wettest months of the main season, with more cloud and afternoon showers.
How the seasons affect the roads
Babusar opens late and closes early
When you go also decides how you get there. The Babusar Pass, the shorter road from Islamabad, usually opens between late May and June and closes with the first heavy snow in autumn; in 2026 it reopened on 25 May. Outside those months the only road is the longer Karakoram Highway through Besham and Dasu, which adds hours to the drive.
So a May or October trip may mean the KKH both ways, and a June or September trip usually gives you the choice. Our route guide from Islamabad compares the two roads.
Monsoon landslides in July and August
The real risk in summer is getting there, not being there. Heavy monsoon rain in July and August causes landslides on the Karakoram Highway and can close the jeep track from Raikot Bridge. In July 2025 a cloudburst brought flash floods on the Babusar road near Chilas, and landslides blocked the road to Fairy Meadows, leaving visitors stranded at the top.
If you travel in July or August:
- Check the forecast and road status the evening before each driving day.
- Keep one spare day at the end of the trip.
- Don't ride the jeep in heavy rain, and don't press a driver to go if the track is uncertain.

- Walking to base camp: July to September, when the upper path is clear.
