For karahi in Karachi, most families drive to the Super Highway, where Shaheen Shinwari and Sajjad Restaurant serve mutton and chicken karahi by the kilo in big open-air restaurants. For karahi by the sea, Sajjad's Do Darya branch is the best-known choice, and Shahid Shinwari covers Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Expect roughly PKR 4,200 to 4,400 for a kilo of mutton karahi and about PKR 3,000 for a kilo of chicken at these places in 2026.
This guide groups the main karahi spots by area, explains what you are ordering and what it costs, and covers the 2026 closing times that now shape a karahi night out.

Where is the best karahi in Karachi?
Super Highway: the karahi drive
Driving out past Sohrab Goth to the Super Highway for karahi is a Karachi weekend habit. The restaurants are large, with family halls, charpais and open-air seating, and you order meat by weight and wait while it is cooked.
Shaheen Shinwari is one of the biggest names. Its main branch is on the Super Highway at Gulzar-e-Hijri, Scheme 33, near the Gulshan-e-Maymar turning, and it also has a branch on Rashid Minhas Road. It is known for Shinwari mutton karahi, cooked with salt, tomato, green chilli and the meat's own fat. A 2026 menu listing puts mutton karahi at PKR 4,400 a kilo and PKR 2,200 for a half.
Sajjad Restaurant also has a Highway branch, and is one of the long-established family restaurants for karahi, barbecue and fish.
Do Darya: karahi by the sea
Sajjad Restaurant on Beach Avenue, Do Darya, DHA Phase 8, is the seafront version: a more polished sit-down restaurant with sea views. Its 2026 menu lists four karahi styles, Peshawari, white dahi, Sulemani and regular, at the same price for each. Mutton karahi is PKR 2,515 for a half and PKR 4,199 for a full, and chicken karahi PKR 2,099 and PKR 2,999, with tax added on top. Our Do Darya guide covers the rest of the strip.
Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Rashid Minhas Road
Shahid Shinwari in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, with a branch in Gulshan-e-Jamal opposite Askari 4, is a popular choice in east Karachi for mutton karahi, Afghani boti and chapli kabab. Rashid Minhas Road has several Shinwari-style restaurants, including the Shaheen Shinwari branch, which makes it easy to reach from Gulshan, Jauhar and the airport side of the city.
Hussainabad and the food streets
If you want karahi as part of a wider evening, Hussainabad food street has karahi alongside barbecue, nihari, biryani and fried fish. It is cheaper and more casual than the Highway restaurants.
Mutton or chicken: which karahi should you order?
- Mutton Shinwari or Peshawari karahi is what the Highway restaurants do best. Expect little spice, plenty of fat and meat on the bone. Order this if you want the classic experience.
- Chicken karahi is cheaper, quicker to cook and more familiar to children. Karachi's "regular" chicken karahi is usually more tomato-heavy and spicier than the Shinwari style.
- White or dahi karahi is made with yoghurt and cream, milder and richer, and good for anyone who finds the red karahi too hot.
- Sulemani karahi is a house style at several restaurants; ask the waiter how theirs is cooked.
Our karahi guide explains each style in more detail, and our Shinwari karahi guide covers where the Shinwari style comes from.
How much karahi should you order?
Karahi is sold by weight, usually as a half kilo or a full kilo. As a rough rule, a half kilo feeds two adults with naan, and a kilo feeds three or four, more if you add barbecue or salad. The weight is the raw meat on the bone, so the cooked dish looks smaller than you might expect.
Mutton karahi costs about 40 per cent more than chicken on Sajjad's 2026 menu, and the gap is similar elsewhere. Naan, raita and salad are charged separately, and most sit-down restaurants add tax to the menu price. Check whether a price is for a half or a full kilo before you order, as menus are not always clear.
When should you go?
Karahi is an evening meal in Karachi, and the Highway restaurants are at their best after sunset, when the heat has eased. Weekend evenings are the busiest.
Late nights have changed in 2026. In September 2026 the federal government again ordered restaurants and food outlets to close by 11 pm, with takeaway and home delivery exempt (Dawn). As a karahi takes time to cook, aim to order by about 9:30 pm. If you want to eat later, order it as takeaway.
Which karahi place suits you?
- For the classic Karachi karahi night: the Super Highway, at Shaheen Shinwari or Sajjad.
- For a family dinner with a view: Sajjad at Do Darya.
- If you live or stay in east Karachi: Shahid Shinwari in Jauhar or the Rashid Minhas Road restaurants.
- On a budget, or with a mixed group: Hussainabad food street.
The Highway drive is worth it if you have a car and an evening free. It is less practical without your own transport, and on a short trip Do Darya or a food street is easier.
