For the best chaat in Karachi, go to Rajoo ki Chaat on main Bahadurabad for dahi puri served to your car, Shams Chaat House in Garden East for chana chaat, Fresco Sweets on Burns Road for dahi baray, and Al Hussaini in the Hyderi area for bhel puri and aloo papri. Chaat is an afternoon and evening food in Karachi, and most stalls are busiest from about 5 pm.

This guide explains the main kinds of chaat you will see, then goes area by area through the places Karachi people name when you ask where to eat it. It also covers fruit chaat, which is less a restaurant dish than a Ramazan habit.

What kinds of chaat does Karachi eat?

"Chaat" covers a whole family of savoury, sweet and sour snacks. The ones you will see most often:

  • Papri chaat. Crisp fried wafers topped with boiled potato, chickpeas, yoghurt, tamarind chutney, green chutney and chaat masala.
  • Chana chaat. Boiled chickpeas with onion, tomato, chilli, lemon and spice, the simplest and often the cheapest plate.
  • Dahi baray. Soft lentil dumplings soaked in spiced, slightly sweet yoghurt with tamarind chutney. Lahore calls them dahi bhallay; Karachi says dahi baray, and also eats the smaller dahi phulki.
  • Gol gappay. Small hollow puris filled with spiced, sour water and eaten in one bite.
  • Dahi puri. The same shells filled with yoghurt and sweet chutney instead of water, a Karachi favourite.
  • Bhel puri. Puffed rice tossed with sev, onion, chutneys and spice, crunchy and quick.
  • Fruit chaat. Chopped seasonal fruit with chaat masala and lemon, eaten mostly at iftar.

Bahadurabad: Rajoo ki Chaat

Rajoo ki Chaat, on main Bahadurabad, is probably the name Karachi people give first when you ask about chaat. Its meethi dahi puri, gol gappay shells filled with sweetened yoghurt and chutney, is the dish it is known for, but the papri chaat and gol gappay are just as popular. It is good value, and staff will serve you in your car, which is useful on a busy evening when parking is short.

Bahadurabad itself is a busy commercial area with a run of food stalls and restaurants that stay busy into the night, so you can make an evening of it. Our Karachi street food guide covers the neighbourhood's other snacks.

Garden East: Shams Chaat House

Shams Chaat House is in Garden East, in the centre of the city, and has a reputation as one of Karachi's long-standing chaat houses. Its special chana chaat is the thing to order. The owner's view, as reported by Food Tribune, is that the ingredients should not be mixed together, so each part keeps its own taste in every bite, and that is how it arrives. The menu also has bhel puri, pani puri and bun kebab.

Garden East is close to the old city, so Shams fits well into an afternoon around Burns Road or Saddar.

Burns Road and Pakistan Chowk: dahi baray

If dahi baray is what you want, go to Burns Road. Fresco Sweets is the name most associated with them there, and it has sold jalebi and traditional sweets for decades. Burns Road is a little more expensive for dahi baray than the street stalls nearby, but it is more organised: waiters will bring plates to your car, there is a proper menu, and the food comes on disposable plates with cutlery and tissues, as Images (Dawn) noted in a 2019 report.

That same report covered Pakistan Chowk, close by in the old city, where small stalls sell chana chaat, gol gappay, kachori and pakoras to office workers and students. One chana chaat seller there worked only from 3 pm to 6 pm, which is typical of the old-city stalls: many sell out and pack up by evening. Go in the afternoon if you want to try them.

Our Burns Road food street guide covers the rest of the street, from nihari to rabri.

Hyderi: Al Hussaini for bhel puri

In the Hyderi area of North Nazimabad, near Dolmen Mall, Al Hussaini has been selling chicken corn soup, chaat and bhel puri for around 30 years, according to a 2023 Aaj News report. Its spicy aloo papri is the dish to order. Everything is made in-house, including its five sauces. Aaj reported it open from 4 pm until midnight, with staff starting in the morning to prepare the soup.

Hyderi is a busy shopping area, so this is an easy stop if you are in North Nazimabad for the market.

Boat Basin, Hussainabad and the food streets

All of Karachi's main food streets have chaat and gol gappay stalls alongside the barbecue and biryani. At Boat Basin in Clifton they are part of a longer evening with rolls, tikka and ice cream; our Boat Basin food street guide covers the street. Hussainabad, in Federal B Area, sells chaat and samosas among more than 50 stalls; see our Hussainabad food street guide.

These are good if your group wants chaat as a starter before a bigger meal, rather than a chaat-only outing.

Where to find fruit chaat in Karachi

Fruit chaat is mostly a Ramazan dish. Every iftar table in the city has a bowl of it: chopped banana, apple, guava, melon or whatever is in season, tossed with chaat masala, lemon and sometimes a little sugar or cream. In the hour before iftar, fruit sellers and sweet shops across the city sell it ready-made, and many chaat stalls add it to their menu.

Outside Ramazan, fruit chaat is easier to find at juice shops and fruit stalls than at chaat houses. If you want to try it fresh, buy it during the afternoon rush before iftar, when turnover is highest. Our Karachi in Ramadan guide covers how the city's food changes during the month.

How to eat chaat in Karachi safely

Chaat is mostly eaten raw or cold, so a little care goes a long way:

  • Choose busy stalls. High turnover means the yoghurt, chutneys and water are fresh.
  • Be careful with gol gappay water in the hot months, especially at quiet stalls. Dahi puri or papri chaat is a safer choice if you are unsure.
  • Ask for less chilli for children. Karachi chaat can be hotter than visitors expect.
  • Carry cash in small notes. Very few chaat stalls take cards.

Our guide to whether street food in Pakistan is safe has more on choosing stalls.

We don't quote prices here. Chaat is among the cheapest food in Karachi, but we could not find reliable 2026 figures, and prices change often with the cost of yoghurt and oil.

Which chaat spot suits you?

  • For a first taste of Karachi chaat: Rajoo ki Chaat in Bahadurabad, ordered to the car.
  • For dahi baray: Fresco Sweets on Burns Road, as part of an old-city evening.
  • For a simple, traditional chana chaat: Shams Chaat House in Garden East.
  • For bhel puri and soup: Al Hussaini in Hyderi.
  • For chaat with a wider meal: Boat Basin or Hussainabad.

If you want chaat as one stop in a longer evening, our Karachi food tour builds a route through Burns Road, Saddar and Boat Basin. For more ideas, see our experiences page.
