Bannu's famous food is a breakfast most of Pakistan would call dessert. In this southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa city, people queue before sunrise for fresh halwa and eat it as the morning meal, plain or with bread. The other dish that carries the city's name is Bannu beef pulao, now sold in almost every big Pakistani city. Add carrot halwa in winter and slow-cooked beef dishes, and you have the core of Bannu famous food.

This guide covers those dishes, the shop that Bannu's halwa breakfast is best known for, what things cost, and where you can eat Bannu food without going to Bannu, which matters because of the current security advice for the district.

Why do people in Bannu eat halwa for breakfast?

Halwa is eaten across Pakistan, but almost always as a sweet after a meal, at a wedding or with puri on a Sunday. Bannu is different. As Arab News reported in January 2026, halwa here is the meal itself, eaten first thing in the morning before work, where other cities would have parathas, omelettes or nihari.

The halwa is made from wheat starch, sugar and ghee. Sugar is dissolved in hot ghee, then a slurry of flour or starch and water goes in, and the cook keeps stirring with heavy strokes until it thickens into a glossy, set sweet that is poured onto trays. The starch version is known as nishasta halwa. It is dense and very sweet, and because it keeps well, people often buy extra and eat the rest the next day.

Local people describe the habit simply as tradition. A regular customer told Arab News that his day goes well once it starts with halwa, which is about as close to a Bannu food philosophy as you will get.

Where is the famous halwa in Bannu?

The name everyone connects with breakfast halwa is Speen Sar. The shop is more than 60 years old and was opened by Akbar Ghulam, whose grandson Zahid Khan runs it now. Speen sar is Pashto for "white head": customers used it as a nickname for the white-haired founder, and it stuck as the shop's name.

The day starts early. The owner told Arab News that they open at the time of the dawn prayer and start cooking straight after it, and the queue forms before sunrise. Besides the starch halwa, the shop makes sohan halwa, milk-based halwa and carrot batches. The price in January 2026 was about PKR 500 per kilogram. Prices rise with sugar and ghee, so treat that as a guide, not a quote.

If you are buying for the road, ask for it packed in a box. It travels well and does not spoil quickly.

What is Bannu beef pulao?

Bannu pulao is the dish that took the city's name to the rest of the country. Bone-in beef is simmered for around four hours with water and spices, so the marrow and bones enrich the stock. The rice, basmati or sella, is cooked separately in ghee with whole spices and browned onions, then brought together with the beef and stock. It is finished with fried onions, green chillies and lemon, and served with yoghurt, raita or a simple salad.

It is a heavy, savoury rice dish rather than a spiced biryani, and in Bannu it is treated as food for gatherings and guests. Restaurants trading as "Bannu Beef Pulao" now operate in Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, and among Pakistanis in the Gulf. Our full Bannu beef pulao guide covers how it is cooked and how to find a good one.

What other dishes is Bannu known for?

Gajar halwa

Carrot halwa is listed by the state news agency APP, in reports from 2024 to 2026, as Bannu's contribution to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's famous winter sweets, alongside Dera Ismail Khan's sohan halwa, Charsadda's rajjar mithai and Mardan's pera. It is a winter dish: grated carrots cooked down slowly in milk, sugar and ghee until dark and rich. Look for it from about November, when the red winter carrots arrive.

Penda

APP's 2023 report on winter food in the province names penda, a slow-cooked beef dish in the style of rosh, as a speciality of Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, with a chicken version too. It is home and gathering food more than a restaurant order, so ask rather than expect to see it on a board.

Everyday food

Away from the specialities, Bannu eats like the rest of the Pashtun south: chapli kebab, namkeen gosht, karahi, samosas and pakoras in the bazaar, and fruit chaat in the evening. The district grows wheat, sugarcane and dates, and it is one of the areas in the province known for good guava, according to a 2008 study in the Sarhad Journal of Agriculture.

Is it safe to go to Bannu for food?

Not at present. The UK government's travel advice, updated 22 September 2026, says not to travel to Bannu district at all. On 9 May 2026 a car bomb and gun attack on a security post in Bannu killed 21 police officers, and the wider area, including Lakki Marwat and the Waziristans, has seen repeated militant attacks through the year.

Families from the district still live, work and travel there every day, and if you have a family or work reason to go, go with local contacts, travel by daylight and check local news and police advice before you set out. But a trip to Bannu for its food is not one we would plan in 2026. If you hold a foreign passport, your own government's advice may say not to go, and travelling against it can void your insurance. Our guide to whether Bannu is safe for tourists sets out the picture in more detail.

Where can you eat Bannu food without going to Bannu?

Most of what makes Bannu famous travels:

  • Beef pulao is the easiest. Look for restaurants with "Bannu" in the name in Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, and go at lunchtime, before the day's pot runs low.
  • Halwa is harder. The Bannu breakfast style is rarely sold elsewhere, but if someone from the area is visiting, a box from Speen Sar is the gift to ask for.
  • Gajar halwa is sold by sweet shops across the country in winter, though not always in the Bannu style.
  • Sohan halwa from nearby Dera Ismail Khan reaches shops in Bannu, Kohat and Peshawar. Our Dera Ismail Khan sohan halwa guide explains what to look for.

Is Bannu food worth seeking out?

Yes, if you like rich, filling food. Beef pulao is the one dish from the city that almost everyone enjoys, and it is easy to find in your own city. The breakfast halwa is more of an acquired habit: very sweet, very rich, and best eaten fresh and warm in the early morning, which is exactly what makes it hard to try away from Bannu.

If you have a sweet tooth and a Bannu friend, ask them to bring a box. Otherwise, start with the pulao, and save the halwa breakfast for a time when the district is open to visitors again.
