What is Alhamra?
The centre began as a non-government arts council, and today the Lahore Arts Council runs it as a provincial agency. The architecture is the draw for many visitors: hand-made red brick over concrete, in the manner of Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque, and it received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998. The jury called it a rare example of flexible spaces.
The complex includes:
- A 1,000-seat main auditorium, completed in 1979
- A 450-seat hexagonal theatre added in 1985
- A 250-seat octagonal hall for lectures and recitals, completed in 1992
- Art galleries in four octagonal blocks, completed in 1984, now including the Ustad Allah Bux gallery
- The Alhamra Modern Art Museum, described as Pakistan's first museum devoted to modern art from 1945 to 1990
- A puppet theatre, a recording studio and the Adabi Baithak, a room for poets and writers
- An academy teaching Kathak, flute, vocal music, tabla, guitar, acting, drawing and violin
What shows and exhibitions happen at Alhamra?
Programmes include stage plays and theatre festivals, concerts, seminars and literary events, workshops, award ceremonies and school functions. The galleries run art shows through the year, and the modern art museum holds a permanent collection.
Two points to keep in mind:
- Popular stage plays can sell out, so book ahead where an online listing exists.
- Something else may be booked into the hall that evening, such as a private ceremony. Confirm that the event you want is open to the public.
How do tickets work?
Ticket prices are not set at the venue level. Each event has its own price, and some are free. Some cultural events cost more, while gallery exhibitions can be free for anyone.

- Check the Lahore Arts Council website (lac.punjab.gov.pk) and its social media for the event listing.
- Look for the event on eticketing.pk, which lists Alhamra as a venue and accepts cards, bank transfer and EasyPaisa. Not every event uses it.
- Buy at the box office for events that sell on the door. Go early for popular shows.
