A 5 days northern areas itinerary from Islamabad works if you choose somewhere within about six or seven hours by road, or fly. The realistic choices are the Neelum valley, Naran and the Kaghan valley, Skardu by air, the Galiyat and Murree, and Swat when the security news is quiet. Hunza and Skardu by road don't fit: they are two days' drive each way, which would leave you one day in the mountains and two exhausting days either side.
Five days is also what most people can get from the office: three days of leave around a weekend. This guide sets out five plans that fit that window without a single all-day drive, and how to squeeze the most out of it.

The rule for five days
Keep every day under about seven hours in the car, and sleep in no more than three places. A five-day trip with two 12-hour days in it is really a three-day trip with a lot of motorway, and the tired drive home on the last day is where most of the risk sits.
That rules out the long hauls: Hunza, Skardu and Fairy Meadows by road, Chitral at 10 to 12 hours each way, and Kumrat at 8.5 to 10. Everything below keeps within the limit.
Plan 1: the Neelum valley
Five days up the Neelum river in Azad Kashmir, following one road as far as Kel and the meadow village of Arang Kel. The altitude stays gentle, and the river is never out of earshot. This is the route of our Neelum Valley Escape.

The Neelum road runs along the Line of Control and closes to tourists when tension rises, as it did in May 2025, and Azad Kashmir as a whole saw a travel advisory and weeks of unrest in June 2026. Check the situation the week before you go. Hotels in Keran, Sharda and Kel fill on summer weekends and at Eid, so book ahead.
Plan 2: Naran and the Kaghan valley
The most popular five-day trip from Islamabad, and a good one from mid-June to September, when the road to Saif-ul-Malook and the Babusar Pass are both open.

The last day is the longest and, on a summer Sunday or after Eid, the slowest; the Kaghan valley road has one lane each way and nowhere to go round a jam. Leave Naran by 7 am. Our five-day Naran Kaghan itinerary goes through each day in detail, with the jeep arrangements.
Plan 3: Skardu by air
The only way to see the Karakoram properly in five days. PIA, Airblue and AirSial fly Islamabad to Skardu in about an hour, so you arrive on the first morning and spend four nights in one hotel.
- Day 1: fly in, Satpara Lake or a short walk by the Indus, early night at about 2,200 metres.
- Day 2: Upper Kachura and Shangrila in the morning, the Katpana cold desert at sunset.
- Day 3: Deosai by jeep, from June to September; the one long day, 10 to 12 hours out and back.
- Day 4: Shigar, which takes half a day, leaving the rest as slack for weather.
- Day 5: fly home.
The risk is the flight, which is cancelled when cloud closes the route. Day 4 absorbs a late arrival or a cloudy Deosai day, but nothing absorbs a cancelled flight home except another day off work, so warn the office. Our five-day Skardu itinerary covers the bookings and the order in more detail.
Plan 4: the Galiyat and Murree
The trip with the least driving and the most walking. Nathia Gali is about two and a half hours from Islamabad, and nothing on this plan is more than an hour from the hotel.
- Day 1: Islamabad to Nathia Gali; St Matthew's Church and the Lalazar park in the evening.
- Day 2: Miranjani, at 2,992 metres the highest point in the Galiyat, a half-day hike.
- Day 3: Mushkpuri from Dunga Gali in the morning, the flat Pipeline Track to Ayubia in the afternoon.
- Day 4: Along the ridge to Murree, with Patriata's chairlift and cable car.
- Day 5: An hour home down the expressway.

Plan 5: Swat and Kalam
Swat fits five days neatly because the motorway gets you to Mingora in four to five hours. The plan that avoids a long last day comes back by the same road in two stages:

Be honest with yourself about security before choosing it in 2026. Militants were reported in the hills around Matta over the summer, and a suicide bombing at a rally in Kabal in August killed 17 people. The main valley is still busy with Pakistani tourists, but check the news and local advice in the week before you go. The road above Bahrain to Kalam is also slow and damaged in places.
Fitting five days around office leave
- Use the evening before. For Naran, drive to Abbottabad or Mansehra after work on the eve of your leave. The Hazara Motorway is fine at night, and you start day 1 in the hills rather than in Islamabad traffic. Don't drive the valley roads beyond it after dark.
- Come home a day early in spirit. Plan to be back by the afternoon of day 5, not late at night before work. The drive home is where tired drivers make mistakes.
- Pick the right five days. A long weekend around a public holiday gives you five days for three days of leave, but it is also when every hotel in Naran and Murree is full. Midweek departures are calmer.
- Warn the office about flights. If you fly to Skardu, a cancelled flight home can cost a day. Build that possibility into the leave you ask for.
Which five-day trip should you choose?
For a family with young children or older parents: the Galiyat, for the short drives, or Skardu by air if you want big mountains.
For friends who want lakes and meadows: Naran and Kaghan in summer.
For a quieter, greener trip at low altitude: the Neelum valley, when the news from Azad Kashmir is calm.
For the most mountain for the least driving: Skardu by air, accepting the flight risk.
