Neither Uber nor Careem gives rides in Pakistan any more. Uber shut its own app in Pakistan in 2024, and Careem stopped ride-hailing on 18 July 2025, so in 2026 the apps to use are InDrive and Yango, with Bykea for bikes and rickshaws. Any old advice that tells you to "just open Careem" is out of date.
That changes the question. Instead of choosing between three familiar apps, you choose between the ones that still work, and you should know where none of them do. This guide covers what happened, how the remaining apps differ, and what to do in the cities and in the mountains.

Do Uber and Careem still work in Pakistan?
No. Uber announced in April 2024 that it would stop its app in Pakistan, having already cut its cities in 2022 and pointed users to Careem, which it bought in 2019. In June 2025 Careem announced that it would suspend its Pakistan ride-hailing from 18 July 2025, citing the economy, competition and the cost of running a safe, dependable service (Dawn, Business Recorder).
Careem still has a presence in Pakistan, with around 400 staff building its wider app, but it does not run rides. If you have the app on your phone, it will not get you a car.
InDrive: the default in most cities
InDrive is the market leader, with more than two million daily active users as of 2024 (Rest of World). Its model differs from the old apps. You do not get a fixed fare. You propose a price and drivers accept or counter, so the fare is a negotiation done on the screen.
Travellers on a Tripadvisor thread describe it as working well in Karachi and Lahore, with a choice of rickshaw, motorbike, non-AC car and AC car. The catch is the same as with any bidding: a fare that is too low gets no takers, and a fare that is too high wastes money. Look at a couple of offers before accepting, and compare with what a taxi would quote.
Yango
Yango is the second-biggest ride-hailing app by users. It covers Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad, and one source lists Multan too. Rest of World reported that it often had the cheapest promotional fares in 2024, but promotions change and we cannot say how fares compare today. Use both apps side by side for the same trip and take the cheaper offer.
Bykea
Bykea started in Karachi in 2016 with motorbike rides and added rickshaws in 2022. It operates in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A bike is cheap and quick in traffic, but it is not for luggage, children or the monsoon. Use it for short solo trips.

What about the mountains?
Ride-hailing apps generally do not run in Skardu, Hunza, Chitral or the other northern valleys. Travellers report that InDrive did not work in Skardu. Tips for using ride apps in Pakistan
- Check the plate and driver name in the app before you get in.
- Confirm the fare on the screen and have small notes ready.
- Share the trip with someone if you are travelling alone at night.
- Screenshot the booking, in case of a dispute or a lost item.
- Have a back-up: two apps installed, and a taxi number for the airport.
Is it safe?
Ride apps in the big cities are widely used by Pakistani travellers, and the usual city precautions apply. If you are heading to Peshawar or Quetta, note that the UK government's advice (updated 22 September 2026) advises against all travel to Peshawar and all of Balochistan. Check local advice before you go there, and if you hold a foreign passport, remember that travelling against your government's advice can void your insurance.
Which should you use?
For a short city trip, install InDrive and Yango, and add Bykea if you are alone. For a family with luggage, book a car category, not a bike. Outside the big cities, expect to arrange transport by phone.
