Applying for the tourist e-visa
The process runs entirely online, through NADRA (Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority), and takes the same basic shape for every nationality:
- Register an account at visa.nadra.gov.pk and select the tourist visa category.
- Upload your documents: a scan of the photo page of your US passport, valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date, a recent digital photograph, and your travel itinerary.
- Pay the visa fee online by card. Pakistan's e-visa fees are set per nationality under a reciprocal fee structure and change from time to time, so check the exact figure shown for a US passport when you apply rather than a number quoted elsewhere.
- Wait for approval. Processing has generally run around 7 to 10 working days in 2026, longer during summer, Eid and the December holidays, so apply several weeks ahead rather than the week before you fly.
- Save and print your approval. You'll need it alongside your passport at immigration, and some hotels and checkpoints in the north ask to see it again during your trip.

What a US e-visa doesn't cover
Your visa lets you into the country; it doesn't automatically clear every region within it. A small number of areas near Pakistan's borders with China, Afghanistan and India, and near the Line of Control in Azad Kashmir, require a separate No Objection Certificate. Most of the main tourist circuit in Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab and central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa doesn't. Check the State Department's travel advisory
The US State Department currently rates Pakistan at Level 3: Reconsider Travel, an advisory in place since March 2026 and unchanged as of a further update in June 2026, citing terrorism, crime, kidnapping and armed conflict. It specifically advises against travel to Balochistan province and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (including the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas), and against travel to the immediate vicinity of the Line of Control in Azad Kashmir.
This advisory is separate from your visa: an e-visa approval does not mean every part of the country is considered safe to visit. A few entry tips
- Bring cash in Pakistani rupees or US dollars for incidental costs on arrival; airport ATMs and card acceptance can be unreliable at smaller entry points.
- Register your trip with the US Embassy in Islamabad's STEP programme before you travel, so the embassy can reach you in an emergency.
- Carry your passport, not just a photocopy, when moving between cities; it's checked at hotel check-in and at some checkpoints, particularly in the north.
