A good one-day trip from Islamabad means leaving early enough to get more than an hour or two at the destination, and timing the return so you are not sitting in the worst of the weekend traffic on the way back. Murree, about an hour and a half away, is the easiest same-day trip. Nathia Gali and the rest of the Galiyat, around two to two and a half hours, still work well in a day if you leave by mid-morning. Muzaffarabad, three and a half hours away, is doable but makes for a long day with less time to enjoy it.

Murree: the easiest same-day trip
Murree is close enough that a one-day trip barely feels rushed. Leaving Islamabad by 7 or 8am on a weekend gets you there by mid-morning, well ahead of the crowds that build through the day. Mall Road, Kashmir Point and Pindi Point are enough to fill a morning and afternoon, and a short run out to Patriata for the chairlift is possible if you start early.
The catch with Murree is not the drive up, it is the drive down. Leave by mid-afternoon rather than waiting until evening, because the road out of Murree and the expressway back toward Islamabad slow down badly as the day's other visitors head home at the same time. Nathia Gali and the Galiyat: possible, but tighter
Nathia Gali is further and higher than Murree, reached from Islamabad via Murree and then the Murree–Nathia Gali road through Bhurban and Changla Gali. A one-day trip works if you leave by 7am: with a two to two-and-a-half hour drive each way, that still leaves three to four hours for a walk on the Pipeline Track or up toward Mushkpuri before you need to start back.
This is enough for a look around, but it is not enough for the two days of walking the Galiyat rewards. Muzaffarabad: a long day, and better as an overnight
At three and a half hours each way, Muzaffarabad is a full seven hours of driving for two or three hours in the town, which is a lot to ask for a single day. It is possible, and some families do it, particularly to see the Neelum river and Pir Chinasi above the town, but it leaves very little room for delay: a slow start, heavy traffic on the way, or a stop for lunch can easily turn the day into a rushed there-and-back with no real time in Kashmir at all.

Traffic: the part that catches people out
Every one of these routes is at its worst on Sunday afternoon, when everyone who left Islamabad on Saturday or Sunday morning is trying to get home at once. A few habits make a real difference:
- Leave home early, both to beat the outbound traffic and to arrive with more of the day still ahead of you.
- Start the return by mid-afternoon, not after an early dinner. The last hour of daylight is when the roads are busiest, not when it feels most natural to leave.
- Avoid Eid weekends and public holidays for a rushed one-day trip. These are the days the expressway and the road through Murree genuinely grind to a halt.
- Check for snow or landslide closures in winter and after heavy rain before you set off, since a closed road with no time in hand can end the day before it starts.
What to carry for a day trip
None of these three destinations need much preparation, but a few things make the day easier:
- A jacket, even in summer. Murree and the Galiyat sit well above Islamabad, and the temperature drop is noticeable by mid-afternoon, more so once the sun starts to go down.
- Cash. Card machines are not reliable everywhere along Mall Road or in smaller Galiyat shops, and the S-2 toll near Kohala is easiest paid in cash.
- A full tank before you leave Islamabad. Fuel stations exist along all three routes, but a queue at a small-town pump is not what you want when you are trying to beat the traffic home.
- Water and snacks for the car, especially with children, since a stop for food can eat into the limited time you have at the destination.
Is a one-day trip worth it?
For Murree, yes, without much hesitation: the drive is short enough that a day trip does not feel like mostly driving. For Nathia Gali, yes if you can leave early and are happy with a shorter visit than an overnight stay would give you. For Muzaffarabad, it depends on the group: fine for a determined couple who want to say they have seen it, less satisfying for families with young children or anyone who would rather spend the day looking around than sitting in the car.
