Luxury Hotels in Skardu: Kachura, Shigar and Khaplu Compared

The luxury hotels in Skardu come down to a short list. At Kachura, Shangrila Resort has been the classic lakeside stay since 1983. Next to the airport, PC Legacy Skardu is the newest big-name hotel. Outside town, the two restored palaces run by Serena, Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace, are the most memorable places to sleep in Baltistan. Don't expect a city five-star with a spa and a pool, because none of them lists one. What you pay for is the setting, the history and a standard of service that is hard to find elsewhere in the valley.

What counts as luxury in Skardu?

Skardu's top end is small. Booking.com listed about 125 places to stay in Skardu in September 2026, and its average for the five-star listings was around USD 170 a night, or roughly PKR 48,000. Rates move a lot with the season, so treat that as a level rather than a price.

Up here, what makes a room worth the money is practical as much as decorative:

• The view. Two rooms in the same hotel can face a lake or a car park.
• Heating and power backup. From October to April, these matter more than the furniture.
• Food. Outside town, the hotel restaurant is often the only one.
• Transfers. The better hotels arrange airport pick-ups and jeeps.

Several newer hotels around Kachura and along the airport road also call themselves luxury. Many have only a season or two of reviews, so read the recent ones before you book.

Shangrila Resort, Kachura

Shangrila is built around Lower Kachura Lake, about 30 km west of Skardu. It was opened in 1983 by Brigadier Muhammad Aslam Khan, the first commander of the Northern Scouts, as the first resort hotel in the region, and his family still runs it. The red pagoda roofs around the water are the image most people have of Skardu.

The rooms. The resort's own site lists lakeside and deluxe lakeside rooms, mountain-view and family rooms, Swiss cottages and villas, executive suites, and two chalets that sleep up to six adults. That spread makes it one of the easier top-end choices for a family travelling together.

On site. The Pagoda restaurant over the water, a café inside the fuselage of an old DC-3, boating on the lake, walking paths and viewpoints, and airport pick-up and drop. Upper Kachura Lake is a few minutes up the road.

The catch. Shangrila is also Skardu's busiest day-trip stop, and day visitors fill the paths on summer afternoons. Staying the night is how you get the lake at dawn and dusk without them. When you book, ask which rooms are furthest from the main paths.

PC Legacy Skardu, by the airport

PC Legacy is the Pearl-Continental group's four-star brand, which the company itself describes as sitting between its five-star and three-star hotels. The Skardu hotel is on Airport Road in Gamba, a short walk from the terminal.

The rooms. Seven categories, from standard king and twin rooms to junior and executive suites, plus one- and two-bedroom chalets.

On site. A restaurant with local and international food, a rooftop eatery with valley views, a coffee shop, a fitness centre and a free airport shuttle. Breakfast is included.

Who it suits. It is the most practical top-end choice on arrival and departure days, when a flight may be late or cancelled, and for anyone who wants a known brand. What it doesn't have is a lake or an orchard outside the door.

Serena Shigar Fort

Shigar Fort is a seventeenth-century palace of the rajas of Shigar, an hour north of Skardu. It was restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service between 1999 and 2004 and won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award in 2006. Serena now runs it as a 20-room hotel.

The rooms. Thirteen are in the old palace, with stone walls, walnut floors and carved woodwork. Seven more conventional rooms are in the Garden House. The three heritage suites were once royal chambers, and the royal suite was the raja's summer quarters, with a hanging wooden balcony above the Shigar stream.

On site. The Fong Khar restaurant serves Pakistani, Balti, Chinese and continental food, including cherry ice cream made from the orchard's fruit. There is a small museum, the Amacha garden, and the fourteenth-century Amburiq mosque a short walk away.

Who it suits. Couples, anyone with an interest in history, and anyone who wants a quiet night within an hour of Skardu. Serena doesn't publish Shigar's rates on its site, so ask for a quote. If you want a palace room, say so when you book: the Garden House is comfortable but has none of the history.

Serena Khaplu Palace

Khaplu Palace was built in the 1840s for the Yabgo rajas of Khaplu, about three hours east of Skardu along the Shyok, and restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. It has 21 rooms and suites. Six are in the old palace: two royal suites, two heritage suites and two standard rooms. The other fifteen are in the Garden House.

Prices. Serena's website listed standard rooms from USD 95, heritage suites from USD 142.50 and royal suites from USD 161.50 a night in September 2026. Rates change by date, so check when you book.

On site. The Sarfa Khar restaurant, which seats 26, serves Balti, Pakistani and continental food, with an outdoor loggia for meals in good weather. The grounds have fruit gardens and an organic vegetable garden.

Who it suits. Anyone going east of Skardu, and couples who want the most atmospheric night of the trip. It is too far for a comfortable day trip, so plan at least one night, and two if you want the Hushe road as well. Ask whether it is open if you are going between November and March. Which one should you choose?

Each of the four does a different job:

• For the lake: Shangrila, ideally for a night or two at the start of the trip.
• For an early flight, or a first night after a late one: PC Legacy, beside the airport.
• For history within an hour of town: Shigar Fort, which also fits neatly with a day at the Sarfaranga dunes.
• For the most memorable single night: Khaplu Palace, if you have the days to get there.

Booking the top-end hotels

These hotels are small, so a few habits help:

1. Book early for April, May, September and October, when the palace rooms go first, and for July, August and holiday weekends everywhere.
2. Book direct or through a well-known booking site, never by paying an advance to a number found on social media.
3. Ask which building your room is in at Shigar and Khaplu, and which way it faces at Shangrila.
4. Check the cancellation terms. Skardu flights are cancelled in bad weather, and a lost first night is common.
5. Confirm heating, winter opening and airport transfers in writing.

Is it worth paying for?

For one or two nights, usually yes. Waking up inside a restored palace, or beside Lower Kachura before the day visitors arrive, is part of the trip rather than just a bed. For a whole week, much of what you pay for goes unused, because you are out from breakfast until dusk.

The best value is a mix: a comfortable mid-range hotel in town for most nights, and one or two nights somewhere special.
