What to do in the first hour
- Retrace your steps. Ask at the last hotel, restaurant, taxi stand or bus counter. CNICs are often handed back.
- Photograph what you still have. If you have a photo or scan of the card on your phone, keep it handy. It gives you the number, which the reprint asks for.
- Report the loss to the local police if it may have been stolen. Sources disagree on whether NADRA asks for a police report for an ordinary reprint, so a report is useful if you are asked, and an FIR is worth having if the card may have been misused.
- Tell whoever you are travelling with so they can vouch for you at hotels and checkpoints.
How to apply for a replacement CNIC
You can apply online or in person.
- Online: Use the Pak ID app or the web portal at id.nadra.gov.pk, choose the reprint option, confirm your record, pay the fee and track the application. Your details need to be unchanged. If your name, address or status has changed, use the modification service instead, and if the card has expired, renew it.
- In person: Go to a NADRA registration centre with your CNIC number, and your record is found from the number or your fingerprints. Bring a photocopy of the old card if you have one.
NADRA has a form called an undertaking for a lost card on its site, so be ready to sign one. The exact documents can change, so check the app or centre first.

Travelling without your CNIC
This is the hard part. Hotels routinely ask for ID, and checkpoints on some routes check CNICs.
- Hotels. Show a photo of the card, your driving licence or passport if you have them, and explain what happened. Many hotels will accept a phone photo along with another ID, though some will refuse, and that is their right. Should you cut the trip short?
Depends on the route. A week of hotels in Lahore, Islamabad and Murree will be fine with a photo, a licence and patience. A journey through checkpoints in the far north, or into an area with security checks, is riskier without a card. - Keep a photo of both sides of your CNIC in a locked folder on your phone, and a paper copy in another bag.
- Carry only one ID card in your wallet, and keep the rest in the hotel room.
