Islamabad International Airport (ISB) is about 30 to 35 km from central Islamabad, and getting into the city takes 40 to 50 minutes by car on a normal day. Your realistic choices are a prepaid airport taxi, a ride-hailing car from the designated pick-up bay, or the Orange Line metro bus, which is the cheapest by far. How far is the airport from Islamabad and Rawalpindi?
The airport is a long way from the city compared with the old Benazir Bhutto International Airport that it replaced. Most travel guides put it 30 to 35 km from the centre of Islamabad, and about 20 to 25 km from Rawalpindi. The drive takes 40 to 50 minutes to areas like the Blue Area, F-6 and F-7 in normal traffic.
Add time for Friday afternoons, the evening rush and the day before Eid. If you have a flight to catch, leave for the airport at least three hours before an international departure and about two hours before a domestic one.
Airport taxi
Official metered or fixed-fare cab desks operate from the arrivals area. Sources quote fixed fares of about PKR 1,600 to F-7 and PKR 1,800 to G-10, and about PKR 2,500 to Rawalpindi Saddar, while another guide lists about PKR 3,000 to the Blue Area. Those figures do not agree, so treat the desk quote as the price and ask for it in writing or on a receipt before you leave.
Airport taxis are the easiest choice if you land late, arrive with a family or heavy luggage, or don't have a working data connection yet. They usually take cash.
Ride-hailing: Careem, Uber, inDrive and Yango
App-based cars are usually cheaper than the desk taxis. Travel guides put a typical airport-to-city fare at about PKR 1,200 to 2,000, though it climbs at peak times. Careem, Uber, inDrive and Yango all operate in the twin cities, and you need to walk to the marked ride-hailing pick-up bay outside the terminal rather than being met at the kerb.
- Get the app working before you land. Airport Wi-Fi is available, but a local SIM or roaming plan makes life simpler.
- Expect to pay cash in many cases, so carry small notes.
- Ignore touts who approach you in the arrivals hall with a "tourist rate". Guides report these quotes can be several times what an app charges.
The Orange Line metro bus
The Orange Line runs 25.6 km between the airport and the Peshawar Morr interchange, where it links with the Red Line of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus. It opened in April 2022, runs about every 10 minutes and operates from around 6:15 am to 10 pm. Fares are low: sources quote between PKR 50 and PKR 100 per ride, which is why a range is safer than one number.
The metro is the cheapest way in, and you can change onto the Red Line for Saddar, Faizabad and the Secretariat. It is slower than a taxi and not much fun with several suitcases or small children, and it does not run through the night. Going straight to Murree, the north or another city
Many visitors land in Islamabad and head straight for the mountains. There is no need to go into the centre first.

- Northern Pakistan by road. Most people hire a car with a driver or join an organised trip. The journey north starts in the twin cities and takes longer than most first-timers expect.

Which option should you choose?
For most people arriving in the daytime, a ride-hailing car is the best balance of price and simplicity. For a night arrival, a family, or a first visit, the official taxi desk is easier. For a solo traveller on a tight budget with light luggage, the metro is fine and takes some getting used to.
Some practical points that apply to all three:
- Cash. Foreign cards do not always work in the airport ATMs, so carry some rupees or withdraw at a city machine when you can.
- SIM cards. Guides report that you cannot always buy a tourist SIM in the arrivals hall, so arrange an eSIM or roaming beforehand if you are visiting from abroad.
- Timing. Allow extra minutes on Fridays and during rush hours, both arriving and departing.
