Best SIM for Northern KPK: Signal Guide

The best SIM for northern KPK depends on exactly where you're headed, but for a trip through Naran, Kalam, Kumrat and Chitral, Zong and Telenor generally give the most consistent coverage of the major networks, with Jazz and Ufone patchier once you leave the main bazaars. None of them cover everywhere: expect real dead zones on high passes, in side valleys and inside forest, whichever SIM you carry.

Naran and Kaghan

Naran's bazaar has decent coverage from most networks, since it is a large town with permanent infrastructure. Telenor and Zong are generally reported as the more reliable choices through the wider Kaghan valley, including on the drive up from Balakot. Jazz works in the town but is less consistent once you head towards Babusar or the higher lakes.

Above Naran, coverage drops quickly. Don't expect a signal at Lake Saiful Muluk, on the Babusar road, or once you're on the pass itself.

Kalam and upper Swat

Zong is usually the strongest option in Kalam and along the upper Swat valley, including in the more mountainous side valleys such as Mankyal. Telenor also works reasonably well but can be inconsistent in the same rough terrain. SCOM and Ufone are present but tend to struggle to hold a signal in the more remote stretches.

If your trip includes both Kalam and the Kaghan side, Zong or Telenor are the safer choices for a single SIM to carry through both.

Kumrat

Kumrat is the most isolated of the four for network coverage. Telenor and Zong are generally the best of the available options, offering the steadiest service for calls, texts and data, with Jazz present in parts of the valley but inconsistent. Coverage can drop in and out simply because of the terrain, particularly beyond Thal and in the forest itself, so don't rely on being reachable once you are deep in the valley.

Chitral

Chitral is remote and mountainous, and coverage across all networks is thinner than in the Kaghan or Swat valleys. Telenor is often cited as a comparatively reliable choice for rural and northern regions generally, which extends to Chitral, but no network should be assumed to cover the whole district. Signal in Chitral town itself is normal, and most of the bazaar and the main government offices have decent coverage on more than one network. Once you're on the roads to the Kalash valleys, over Lowari or Shandur, or further into the district, treat any coverage as a bonus rather than something to plan around, and don't assume the network that worked in town will follow you up the valley.

A note on data and roaming

If you rely on a Pakistani SIM's data package for maps or messaging apps, buy the bundle before you leave the last major town, since it is often harder to top up or activate a package once you are somewhere with a weak signal. Overseas visitors on international roaming should expect it to be even less reliable than a local SIM in these same areas, and a local SIM bought in Islamabad or Peshawar before heading north is usually the more dependable option.

What to actually do about it

• Buy more than one SIM if your trip is long or covers several of these areas. No single network is strong everywhere, and a second SIM from a different company is cheap insurance.
• Download offline maps before you leave. Google Maps and other apps let you save an area for offline use, which matters once you lose data.
• Agree a check-in plan with anyone not travelling with you, especially for a day out like Babusar Top or a trek near Kumrat, since you may be unreachable for hours at a time.
• Carry a portable charger. A phone hunting for signal in the hills drains its battery faster than normal.
• Don't rely on a hotel's wifi claim. In smaller towns it is often slow or intermittent, even when advertised.
