The best nihari in Karachi is eaten early in the morning, at one of a handful of old houses that the city argues about endlessly: Zahid on Tariq Road and in Saddar, Javed in Federal B Area, and Sabri, Malik and Waheed on or near the old-city food streets. A plate now costs roughly PKR 650 to 700 at the busier branches (2026), and Sunday breakfast is when most of them are at their best and their busiest.

Nihari is a slow-cooked beef stew with a thick, spicy gravy, eaten with naan. This guide is about where to go and when. For the wider street around Burns Road, see our Burns Road food street guide.

Why does Karachi care so much about nihari?

Nihari is said to come from Old Delhi in the late 1700s, and its name is usually linked to the Arabic word for day, because it was eaten in the morning. Accounts of Karachi's food history say it was unknown in what is now Pakistan before Partition. It arrived with cooks who came from Delhi and it was first sold in the neighbourhoods where Delhi families settled, such as Burns Road and Eidgah.

That explains why so many of the famous names sit in the old city. Sabri Nihari is on M.A. Jinnah Road, and the Waheed and Malik shops are on Burns Road. The newer champions, Zahid and Javed, are in other parts of town.

The classic places

Zahid Nihari, Tariq Road and Saddar

A Dawn food guide called it possibly the best nihari in Karachi, and it remains one of the most talked-about names. It offers ordinary nihari, and versions with bone marrow or brain. Listings show it open from about 7 am until midnight at both branches. A delivery menu in 2026 shows a regular plate at roughly PKR 690 to 710.

Javed Nihari, Federal B Area and Bahadurabad

Known for generous servings with plenty of bone marrow, with listings showing hours of about 7 am to 11 pm. Delivery menus show a regular plate at about PKR 650 in 2026, and nalli or maghaz options at roughly PKR 1,150 to 1,200. Some Karachiites find its gravy sweeter than the others, so it suits those who like a rounder, less fiery bowl.

Sabri Nihari, M.A. Jinnah Road

One of the oldest nihari shops in the city, near the Urdu Bazaar end of the road, with indoor and open-air seating. Local food history credits it with easing back on the chilli compared with its rivals. Hours reported in listings start around 11 am, which makes it a late-breakfast or lunch stop, not an early one.

Malik and Waheed, Burns Road

Malik has a Burns Road branch, and locals recommend going early on a Sunday before about 9 am. Waheed Kabab House, also on Burns Road, is known for its kababs as much as its nihari. These two are the place to go if you want the old-city setting around your plate.

When to eat it

Nihari began as a breakfast, and the tradition holds. Eating early also means you avoid the worst of the summer heat and the lunchtime crowds.

  • Sunday morning is the classic time. Expect crowds at the most popular shops and go early.
  • Weekday mornings are quieter, especially at the Burns Road end of town.
  • Late evening works too, since several places stay open past midnight, but the choice of cuts may be narrower.

Opening hours in online listings vary by source and by branch. Where a listing conflicts with what is on the door, believe the door.

What to order

A plain plate is the benchmark, and it lets you judge the cooking. After that:

  • Nalli nihari, made with bone marrow, richer and more expensive.
  • Maghaz (brain), for those who want it. Zahid and Javed both list it.
  • Extra naan or paratha, because the gravy is the point.
  • Fresh ginger, coriander and a squeeze of lemon, which most shops put on the plate or the table.

Nihari is spicy. If you want it milder, say so when you order.

Is it right for you?

Nihari suits people who like a heavy, rich breakfast and do not mind spice. It is not a light meal, and it is not the dish for a hot afternoon. Families with young children can eat it, but ask for the spice to be reduced, and consider a lighter plate for children.

If you do not eat beef, most nihari shops will not have an alternative you would want. Karachi's other breakfasts, covered in our best breakfast in Karachi guide, are a better bet.
